Reference Series 250

Posted by: John Schmidt on 30 July 2003

I was just browsing through the spring newsletter and noticed 1) the venerable NAP 250 has had some significant design changes, 2) cosmetic updates will be available for some older gear to make them visually compatible with the new reference series gear.

What's not clear is whether an older (classic?) 250 can be upgraded, or whether the new design is too different for such a change to be feasible.

Anyone out there know the situation?

Cheers,

The new 250 differs sharply in curcuit topology and sonics from the previous version, and a friend of mine thinks a new 200 outperforms the original, recapped 250 smartly.

The old models benefit from a recap after 7 years of use and the new casing is claimed to make a difference too. Both should be done by a dealer.

Hi John:

My NAP 250 was purchased in approximately 1987.
This is "mid-design" for the unit. I had the unit recapped about 8 years later. Even at that time, I could not get NAIM to upgrade the output power transistors to the latest specification - I was told that that upgrade was incompatible with my older unit. So I suspect that there is "not much hope" that you'll be able to upgrade such a 250 to the new
250 spec's. For one thing, the new 250 has a much larger toroidal transformer in it - there isn't room to upgrade that into the older 250's.

By the way, if you are the same John Schmidt that graduated (PH.D.) from the University of Western Ontario, please contact me via e-mail or telephone!
