Found my Troika!

Posted by: Stuart M on 14 April 2003

About 7 years ago I went to use my Troika and discovered a bent cantilever (no one ever admitted it) and at the time was told that Linn were no longer doing a cartridge trade in and no rebuild was available (that I could afford) so it was put in a “safe” place. And an Ortofon MC20 took it’s place (not nice) years later when I had some £££ (and moved house) and heard Linn would do rebuilds could I find it, could I bog roll. I now have a DV20X-L on Itock IV II and last Sunday found the Troika ;-)

Cantilever is bent and rubber is perished but I still yearn for the Troika sound. Who could fix it and how much. If I go for the Linn trade in how much is it worth and what would be a good replacement to go in the Itock? Would it be better to stick with the DV and get a: Lingo 2 (Yes I know an Armageddon would be better but I have loads of 45’s and if I spend that amount on a PS I want a 45 button).

To err is human; to really foul it up requires a computer.

Hi Stuart

There are plenty of rebuild bods out there; others will supply names but reports vary from great to hmmmm.

The Troika is worth £200 against an Akiva ( which I think is a fantastic cartridge )which has a list price of around £1800....eeek

The Lingo 2 is a pretty darn good upgrade too; I have heard both and it is next on my wish list.

Regards

The Linn website still lists their cartridge rebuild service and quotes a Troika rebuild at £495 (inc VAT).

The order form is at http://www.linn.co.uk/buy_linn/order_form.cfm

It's worth following up. I also know it is possible to buy fully reconditioned Troikas and Karmas from Linn via your dealer.

Heh heh, I'm glad you're enjoying them. I'll be stirring my Katans soon with some new vinyl that's arrived from Amazon.co.uk

Katans are amazing, you really should consider getting a pair Wink

I think the ES Troika rebuilds get such a mixed reception because they are themselves very hit and miss. Mine very soon sounded as uninteresting as the DV20X it replaced, yet the proper Troika that the DV replaced was superb. Garyi's 'knackered' 17D2 was a blessed relief after the EST, the XX2 in a different league entirely.
