Bagpus is great but my all time Oliver Postgate favourite is Noggin the Nog. Does anyone know on what figures Noggin the nog was based on?

What about you, Thor Nogssun?
The Lewis Chessmen

As an aside, one of our neighbours when I was a boy was the composer Vernon Elliot, who wrote the music for a number of the Postgates , including **Pogle's Wood, Noggin the Nog, and Ivor the Engine. Though IMO his musical masterpiece for Postgate was the Clangers.
James
EDIT ** I've just double-checked!

Spot on James
. I love Noggin and I think the Lewis chessmen are one of our most beautiful national treasures.

This is a photo of a man who was said to have a powerful sexual megnetism that women could not resist, is it our Chillkram surrounded by adoring females or someone else?

Posted on: 05 April 2007 by JWM
He looks like a pest, so could be Chillkram
But even he isn't that old, so it must be Rasputin.

You cheeky man! Looks like the mad monk himself to me!
Posted on: 05 April 2007 by Chillkram
Oops! Looks like James beat me to it!
Posted on: 05 April 2007 by acad tsunami
Yes, Rasputin was known as the 'mad monk' (1 point to James and 1 to Mark for getting his nickname)not that he was an ordained monk (Rasputin that is). From monks to priests now.

Fr Conrad Noel, Vicar of Thaxtead, Essex, after WWI. He cleared the side-aisles of pews for morris dancing, and flew the red flag from the church tower. (A flippant, if affectionate observation - have a more serious look at http://www.anglocatholicsocialism.org/noel.html)

The guy behind Sam Rayburn is John Connally I think - wasn't he also shot when Kennedy was assasinated?
Where would you find a molgogger fairlead?

Deane, no cheating but you are correct. As speaker of the house, from pres Roosevelt through Kennedy one of the most powerful men in America during the post war era.
Rob B, Correct. John B Connally, former Governor of Texas seated behind Kennedy in the car on Nov 22, 1963.

Yep.
James has found another 'red' priest I had not heard of - Conrad Noel was a bit of a character it seems.

Here is an easy one - who is this playing chess?
Here is a horribly difficult one - who are the two chaps playing chess?

Top one is easy - it's Crazy Bob Fischer.
Bottom one is harder. Will have a poke around on an internet I have in my computer thingie and see if I can find out...

Thought so - the player on the left (Black) is the inimitable Capablanca.
Now to find out who is the other player...

Yes, it is Bobby Fischer - mad as a bag of snakes and nasty with it. IQ of 180 and very few redeeming features other than the fact he played beautiful chess.

Is it?

Well Acad, with a little help from a friend, I can retract my guesses of Capablanca and Tartakower...
...and firmly posit that the two chess players are the musicians Sergei Prokofiev (bespectacled) and David Oistrakh.
I am no longer sure that the observer is Fritz - pre-op. I'd say it's probably an SNCO in drag (mmmm - tasty!)

Blimey, I'm impressed! It is indeed Prokofiev and Oistrakh. You and your friend must be a couple of clever gits.
