CDX2 arrives

Posted by: david needham on 06 September 2003

My CDX2 arrived yesterday, along with a NAPSC to go with my 202/200/Flatcap2 and replace my CD5.

First impressions - much more depth, vocals further forwards, more detail and, yes PRAT. Possibly less mid range control, and the soundstage seems more compressed. Let's hope those are "burn-in" issues.

The best thing, though, was the response from SWMBO. After weeks of "Why do you need to change it?" and "Is it really worth all that money?", I sat her down, put on Nora Jones and delighted at her response - "Wow, I wouldn't have thought it could sound that much better than before!"

YES! Result!!!

I've had some interest in my CD5, so I may not lose so much money by trading it in after all.

This looks set to be a fine weekend!

Dave

My CDX (which I have since sold) took 2/3 weeks to run in and it took about 48 hours to sound anything like it should.

Let us know what you think Monday evening, I bet you will be a lot happier then.

Regards

Mick

My CDX2 (now 2 weeks old) took a week. Out of the box it was obviously better than the Arcam Alpha 5 it replaced (no surprises there). 1/4 of an hour in it was notably improved, but I noticed a definite performance drop during the first few days - perceptible harshness which disappeared by day 7, since when it just sounds fantastic - enjoy Smile

The CDX2 is better that the CD5 (and it should be). What we want to see if the CDX2 is better than other CDplayers of the same price range (like Meridian, Wadia, Metronome ...) I recently got a XPS2 for my CDX2 and it is better with the XPS2 (but again it is obvious!).

Hi,
I've had my CDX2 just over a week, replacing a hi-capped 3.5 (the Hi-cap is now powering the pre in place of a flat cap).
Initial impressions were of a much better sound stage, better treble control, and more depth. There is better space and separation between instruments/vocals also..
One week in and all that is still there but now my system has bass: tidy, but deep and controlled bass.
I am well happy with the upgrade - next item will be the XPS2...

The CDX2 must be a better player than the CDS2 then, cos on the CDS2 Nora sounds horrible Frown

Then again, given the choice between Nordost Valhalla and a handbag, I choose a handbag - so maybe the women are onto something

If you can afford Nordost Valhalla and your thinking about a handbag your horizons to small. You need to think bigger after all a Merc or a BMW would be a more worthy comparison (2nd hand of course).

Anyway what is wrong with Nora Jones. She sounde pretty good to me.
Oops that was on Vinyl sorry

Obviously you don't shop in all the right places - try Gucci, Prada etc and you will see that they cater for the Nordost lover Wink

And you should see what my wife manages to fit inside her handbag - bloody tardis !!!

A day out in Harvey Nick's should really scare you back into the upgrade path. Go shopping there and convert to music-pounds........

OK, CDX2 been here a week now - whats happened?
I'm still somewhat suspicious as to whether "burn in" is just "getting used to it", however despite whatever psychology may be involved, I'm a happier bunny. The soundstage has settled back, and the mid range has reappeared but without compromising the extended bass and vocal presence.

Dear Kid, I posted my views on CD5/Flatcap2/CDX2 here:

http://forums.naim-audio.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=67019385&f=48019385&m=9901945376

Although, my sistem has changed agian from yours now - I've had the mains done. Three 6mm spurs from a new consumer unit (yes, I know I should have done 10mm, just don't go there!!) into three unfused crabtree sockets.

My dealer came round and spent a couple of hours setting the sistem back up and tweaking various things (thanks Dave).

Wow!

Another NAPSC moment! I'd previously been chatting with someone who had suggested mains made no difference to hi-fi - guaranteed to freak you just as you're pulling up floorboards! How wrong he was! Again SHMBO could tell the difference (and she is very sceptical). "There's more space around the notes" said the woman who's never read a hi-fi review in her life.

Looks like this is going to be another great weekend!

Do women still use handbags?
