Harsh sounding cd2

Posted by: Erik (DK) on 12 February 2003

Ten days ago I borrowed a cd2 to replace my cd3.5. The rest of the system is:
92-Hi(needs recap)-90,black Snaics, 2*5m naca5, KanII on Sound Org. stands (at least I think so, deffeniely not orig. Linn stands).

My system imediately sounded much much more expencive. And the sound improved with leaving the cdplayer on for several days. Yet some of the fun seems to have gone. And voices are quite a lot less pleasent to listen to now (compared to the cd3.5).
It's missing all the joy that my Axis,Akito2,K-18 represents. May this be due to poor setup? My rack, by the way, is of some scandinavian make, called Aavik, and comsist of three levels of 4 cm thick woodplates, width beeing about 1 meter.

Any thoughts?

My CD2 took at least a week before giving the level of performance it does now.

also, I found that the quality of the boxes downstream begins to be very important at that level. The improvement I got when I bought the CD2 were initialy a lot greater throught my rega ear/senn580 than through my nac72/hi nap180. Having moved to a 102/hi 250 (thanks Bernard Wink), there was a huge leap in finess and musicality (in the same way I had initially experienced with the headphones).

Other my have better explanation or have more experience with your setup (90-92) than I have though.

Keep on searching for the answer. The CD2 is a very good player!

I wouldn't think so. The s/r being 129xxx it's not that old. Also I know the history of this player, and it's been taken good care of. Actually it was bought at music-line in Hamburg in '99 and is still under warranty.

Erik

Two things spring to mind:-

1. The CD2 is more revealing and is showing up problems, further down the line.

2. A friend's CDS1 sounded decidedly harsh and nasty, about a week before the transport died, and it refused to spin a disc.

Naim amps have a superb reputation for longevity. Don't forget that a CD transport will wear out. Period. I'd think long and hard about buying a player this old, unless you are prepared for the possible expense of a new transport.

Hei Erik.
I second that belief that there might be something wrong with that player.
There´s nothing the 3,5 does that the 2 won´t do better.
I would stay off buying it if your not able to get it so cheap that you can send it off for repair or service with not to much of a financial loss.

Your CD2 is early 1997 according to Naim's serial no. decoder.

Erik,

my CD2 is a bit older than yours and still sounds superb. Possibly some lost pucks inside the player?
Good luck
