What a lot of good folk singers are around at the moment

Posted by: Guido Fawkes on 11 February 2007

Whilst listening to Kate Rusby, I suddenly thought what a lot of good folk singers there are these days, not just Kate, but Karine Polwart, Rachel Unthank, Lou Rhodes and Angie Palmer.

Any to you'd care to add to this growing list?

Thanks - some more good ideas to check out.

I'd like to add Pumajaw. Sort of what folk would be like if Portishead did it. Pinkie Maclure has a great smoky voice and the arrangements are sufficiently off-kilter too.

Pumajaw are a new one to me, but sound excellent. My first time on myspace too - how old does that make me sound!!

Myspace has become a significant source of new stuff for me - there's a lot of ordinary stuff but some real gems hidden away - that and The Freak Zone (BBC 6Music), which is where I heard Pumajaw in the first place.

Hi Glenda

Do you know if there any samples I could listen to?

Many thanks, Rotf

Sounds a bit Robin Williamson - and there's nothing wrong with that in my book. Thanks for the tip - certainly worth listening to.

I often check Myspace even before a band/artists website. The good thing about it is you have a chance to listen to most of four tracks to get an idea whether you want to take that interest any further.

I'd add Martha Tilston and Charlie Dore. The latter wasn't really a folk singer but her last 2 albums are very acoustic with brilliant songwriting.

I received my Pumajaw CD yesterday. It was accompanied by a postcard signed by the band - a nice touch I thought. And it's a really good CD too!
