Is the 92R/90.3 a dog?

Posted by: bec143 on 25 February 2002

Dear Forum,

I recently bought a second hand 92R/90/Flatcap. Last week I added an essentially new CD5 (dealer demo). In the course of experimenting with the FC on the cd5 vs the 92 and asking questions, and reading past forum threads, I've noticed that most of the comments regarding the 92/90 are not flattering at all! They seem to range from the vaguely sympathetic, to outright visceral disgust. So, is this combo some sort of Naim abomination, atypical of Naim overall, or simply entry level? I'm pretty happy with the sound overall (into Vienna Acoustic speakers), but I can begin to see the next upgrade ahead. I was thinking about a Hicap, but maybe the preAmp should change first.

I have had a listen as I have a Nait 3 and was considering the upgrade...I was pretty impressed, it sounded similar to my Nait, but cleaner, faster etc...the option to add bigger power amps also means a good starting step on the ladder.

A Hi-Cap would be a good investment, it works very well on the 92, but alos experiment with flat and Hi on both CD and pre see which you think gives the best result.

I haven't heard the 92/90.3 with a flatcap but adding a hi-cap totally changed the original sound much more wholesome and the bass extension was fantastic.

I am considering moving up to a 102 pre and possibly a 180 power but the 92/90.3 with hi-cap sounds pretty good through my Royd Abbots. My dealer Infidelity in Kingston speak very highly of the 92/hi-cap option.

Many people talk about "source first" which is why I went for new CDP first and upgraded my Arcam Delta 90.2 to a CDX and was not disappointed with the level of detail I got, now feel the 92/90 is not letting me hear all of what my CDX has to offer.

I used a 92R/90.3 for a number of years and it's a very good amp. I demoed it against a Nait3R and it was clearly better.

The only problem I had with mine was that it runs out of steam a bit when driving Credos at higher volumes but with other speakers (mainly small, sensitive standmounters) it sounds very good indeed.

I compared my 92R directly with my 32.5 and of the two I marginally preferred the 92R, especially with phono.

I owned a 92/90/flatcap for over five years and was a cracking amp, I don't know where you are getting that it is a dog. What is important is does it sound good to you?

It certainly did to me, you have to bear in mind that until you reach at least an 82, you are small fry on this forum!

That dosn't detract from the fact the 92/90 is a great combo, easily wiping the floor with most stuff at the price range IMO

Having a big wallet does not necessarily make someone a hi-fi expert.

Dear Bec143,

As garyi's view, 92R/90/3 are very capable combo,
I bought them new less than 4 years old, I was very happy with them (at the time I did preferred the slimline look, rather than higher model), then I upgraded with 02 flat-caps to 92R & CD3.5, then Hi-cap, went active with Snaxo2-4 & SBL, now to my existing system.

Of course if you compare to their big brothers, like 82/52 or 250/500, there is hugh difference, that's why we have to work hard to finance our hobbies.

Now I got my trade-in 90/3 back and order a new one to power my AV processor, my naim system to drive the front L & R for the AV.

cheers
Martin
