Can you guys reccomend anything off the warp label?

Aphex Twin aside, which with much effort I think is utter cak.

Cheers

Warp is the second most featured label in my collection after anticon. my top 5 warp releases would be:

1 - Clonks Coming - Sweet Exorcist

2 - Prefuse 73 - vocal studies and uprock narratives

3 - Antipop Consortium - The ends against the middle

4 - Nightmares on wax - word of science

5 - plaid - rest proof clockwork

FWIW, (imo) they're starting to look a bit shabby compared to their recent off-shoot, Lexoleum records. check lex trilogy for starters .

"Rest Proof Clockwork" is a work of genius that dwarfs the rest of their catalogue. Its probably a bit too young and hip for garyi though (who is logicaly, if not physically, as old as Nick Lees).

Matthew I have Restproof clock work and the recent plaid remixes.

So wind yer neck in.

Mekon Et al, thanks for the reccomendations. I have a rake of stuff on Ninja, and not a lot on warp, what of this anticon?

Gary,

anticon is an avant hip hop label in the US. they are in with the Ninjatune lot, as they have stuff on
mush records, who are licensed in the UK by Big Dada, ninja's weirder subsidiary.

I'd suggest you try the first Fog album on Ninjatune, and if you like that, then try 'no more wig for ohio' by odd nosdam, or 'the early whitney ep' by why?, both on anticon. If they work for you, the archetypal anticon album is the cLOUDEAD album, which is on big dada in the UK.

You should have a good look through the big dada catalog tho'. For instance, I am loving the NMS album at the mo' (best described as harsh but fair).

Garyi

Can you give an indication of what sort of stuff you do like in the genre. If you don't like any Twin then I am a bit stumped, as he has experimented with many types of electronic based music. Is it all Twin or just "hard uncompromising Twin" you don't like?

There is some great stuff on Warp, but we are probably better off recommending specific records rather than astists because, for example, Autechre's records can be either great or unlistenable.

Drukqs was a huge disappointment for me, as was Mixes for Cash, but otherwise AT albums are sensational. My fave is Come to Daddy. Shouldn't write them off though, so try the Selected Ambient Works 85 - 92, or Selected Ambient Works Vol 2.
There is also Boards of Canada of course - Try Music Has the Right to Children.
You can hear all of them here on the Warp website.

i would feel more able to recommend knowing what you like, as opposed to what you don't like.

afx has lots of different styles and most of his albums sound very different - compare SAW1, i care because you do and drukqs. what stuff of his have you listened to? i know plenty of people who really love 1 afx album and hate the others.

Yep Drukqs was pretty bad.

I have selected ambient works, and its just pap. for tha amount of time I can bare to listen its just like a treble tester.

No thanks.

In fairness this is my only exposure to Aphex Twin.

Now now I said no Aphex Twin, and this thread is degenerating into an Aphex Twin thread.

No Aphex Twin!

You should try some of the complilations on offer from Warp. I must admit I prefer alot of their early stuff. It was great stuff in the clubs in Sheffield at the time.

Have a look at

selected ambient works 1?

treble tester?

errrr, ok.

perhaps you'd be better off with some status quo or dire straits.

as regards warp records - move along, sir. there's nothing to see here.

Mr Spatula, ambient works is just that, loads of treble weirdness. I don't mean harshness, but its all up there without a hell of a lot going on.

Alex, I have both the albums you mention and they are both great coupled with NOW I was hoping for more recommendations.

I have a few to play with now, cheers.

I'd recommend the first Squarepusher CD, "Feed Me Weird Things", which is a more accessible than some of his subsequent output, and has lots of his fretless bass stylings.

Also worth a listen is Plone's "For Beginner Piano". It's a bit kitsch/retro (lots of analogue synths), but none the worse for that. As far s I know they've only released that one album.

And finally, one to avoid, Chris Clark's "Clarence Park", which is a bit painful.

saw 1 has some tape drop out and the like, but that's because it was originally recorded on c90s. It's also *possibly* my favorite album (certainly the one I have listened to most). To deride it because of some problem you have with its treble seems a tad harsh.

Try "i care because you do" or "richard d james". Go on. I dare ya.

ps unsurprisingly, i LOVE chris clark's Clarence Park! plus his latest album is excellent.
