Help with CD5 Connected to a Non Naim Preamp

Posted by: achandoke on 02 September 2002

I currently own a Naim CD5 powered by a Hicap. I use my CD5 with a Plinius Amp/Preamp, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend to me an interconnect that is Din to RCA. Currently, I have Russ Andrews Kimber Kable PBJ Din to RCA, but I think I can achieve more with a different interconnect. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Some people have recommended finding a dealer that would use the ARO cable to make a DIN to RCA termination, but I dont know of any that do this. Thank you.

Nordost supplies DIN-RCA (and DIN-DIN) versions of their cables.

I have recently been auditioning several din-to-rca interconnects for use between my CDS2 and either a Plinius or ATC preamp. I suspected there was more music to be had than what I was hearing through the Chord Cobra 2 interconnect.

Based on Art Dudley's review in a recent issue of Listener, I had a one meter pair made up by Wasatch Cable Works of their 104-U cable. They also let me try one made of a far more expensive wire; I preferred the more modest one. The 104-U is a good choice.

The other cable I liked is made from LAT International wire (a US-based company) but they don't do din terminations here in the US. Their UK distributor (Audusa) carried them as a standard item.

All this cable auditioning has confirmed that I am a certified, card-carrying sad git.

Hi,

Has anyone compared KCAG (attenuated) to HifiCables silver interconnect?

Cheers,

I find it difficult to believe that the Naim supplied ones are the best -- they are fairly conventional copper designs, from what I can tell.

Perhaps naim know what some other people know i.e. that the cable industry is making money on the back of audiophile gullibility.

Of course some might say that naim is making money on its products for the same reason.

cheers

"Of course some might say that naim is making money on its products for the same reason."

Not at the prices they charge, surely Naim cables represent excellent value for money.

They could easily introduce a new 'improved' range, inflate the prices and people will flock to buy them because they are new and have the Naim logo on them.

I still think that in an all Naim system their cabling works best.

I think DNM is a viable low cost alternative and when the system is not all Naim its preferable.

Isolda speaker cable comprehensively outperforms 8TC.

Any good dealer should lend you cable - if its crap just give it back. Kimber's 30 day sale or return policy should enable you to decide whether something's better or not (although it did take that long for me to decide 8TC wasn't for me).

I have a solid silver whizz bang IC - Din > 2 phono which I might be willing to sell.

Jim, How much was the din terminated Wasatch? Is this a standard item, or did they make it up for you?

If you ignore directionality of the cable material, can someone explain the difference between cables designed for non-naim source to naim pre-amp and cables for naim source to non-naim pre? Perhaps there are no differences but I hear such things as dual mono and haven't a clue what that means.
