Steven Wilson (Of Porcupine Tree and NoMan) and his stereo

Posted by: Stephen Bennett on 11 July 2002

I asked Steven what he used for listening to - here's the reply

'I have a Musical Fidelity XA200R amplifier, Monitor Audio speakers, an Arcam Alpha 7Se CD player and a Project Debut turntable. It sounds pretty good !'

In my experience with musicians, he's right. Most of them have some really ropey stuff, so this is a pretty good system!

I've asked him about his monitoring too. More info when I have it.

Khoi

I've asked him about his monitoring - but he's in America touring at the moment. When he's next in Norwich I'll insist he comes out to my friends Naim dealership and listen to some hi-fi.

wink

On a more general note, I haven't noticed the PT sound is more harsh than some other stuff recently recorded - at least on my Naim and Naim/PMC systems. I do agree though that modern recordings are much brighter than of old (the Elbow album, for example), but that's what is expected now - bright and very loud to sound good on cheap stereos.

I dont think all the recordings are 'bright'...Signify was the opposite, a bit duller and a bit more recessed...But Lightbulb Sun sounds great on my system...Stupid Dream varies I think...

I think in general SW does a good balance, and now they are on a bigger label they may have access to better kit, producers etc....

Fingers crossed!!!!!!!!
