spyware

hi guys,
ive got a great brand new pc from dell and am overall very happy with it but i have an ongoing
annoying problem.
when i first boot it up for around 20-30 mins the spyware/spyzapper programme scans automatically but logs off my aol connection every time which automatically reboots after the scan.
pc is running through vista and has mcafee protection pre-installed.
i have turned spyscanner off but obviously am now running the risk of viruses to which mcafee is warning me that i could be at risk !! but at least i seem to be able to stay online now.
i have tried deleting and reinstalled aol to no avail. dell says its an aol issue but i havent spoken to them as yet. ANY IDEAS OF A FIX OR DO YOU HAVE SAME PROBLEM ?
regards, annoyed scotty Confused

Hi there mate, how ya doing? Any more thoughts on speakers yet?
As far as the computer problem is concerned, I'm afraid I'm not a fan of AOL or Mcafee. When I got my computer, which had the same bundle, I immediately got rid of both, & went with the free version of AVG, who doa good spyware package. Adaware are also good for spyware too, apparently.
This may seem like a sledgehammer to crack a walnut, especially if you are happy with AOL.
Up the 'ammers,
Matt.

I no longer use AOL but like you I suffered at the hands of the zapper and so I turned it off leaving the task to other software. From what I can remember put the phrase "zapper" (or something like it) into the part of the screen that allows one to search AOL by keyword and if all goes well up will pop a screen describing the benefits of using the AOL Zapper and what can happen if you don't. You should then find a link that will take you to a page that allows you to control the zapper, turn it off and things should start to get better.

hi matt,
i know what your saying about aol and mcafee but ive only just got the pc and want to persevere with it a little longer.
i went to reading the other week and the irons took them apart, should have been many more.most enjoyable, best performance for a long time.
roy, as i said ive turned spyware off but am now open to attack from viruses. the main problem with dell is that everything comes pre-installed and therefore very difficult to remove completely.

munch
im using aol for home and business so cant delete that. if you mean spyware that is attached to mcafee which protects most of my computer so i really need at least part of it.
what i have done is turn the spyzapper off for web browsing which isnt ideal BUT aol stays online now. mcafee points out that im not fully protected by doing this but at the moment thats the only solution open to me untill i suss a better way.

update guys - ive now removed mcafee altogether as it was driving me nuts even though i got 3yrs cover with the dell pc !!
the spyzapper auto scan spyware thingy kept scanning about every 5mins unlogging me from aol
very annoying especially when half way through writing emails.
can any of you guys out there recommend some sort of anti-virus programme i can download for free. and dont say mcafee !!and MUST be compatible with AOL.
also do all these programmes come with spyware or spyzapper ??
thanks in advance, scotty

AVG, anti virus. Those who use it swear by it. Also Lavasoft anti-spyware I remember being pretty good at rooting out nasties. Both are free.

i use AVG too, after getting frustrated with Norton. but i am only using the anti-virus free version. is their fee spyware equally unintrusive but effective?
