Im sure the download is the sat link, but the upload is still through your dial up.
Unless you pay big money and get a satellite upload/download system.

You have to have a bloody big garden to have one of BTs dishes there.

The whole Satellite Internet access thing has changed quite a lot since I last sought help from Mr Google although you still need a fair bit of cash to give it a go via satellte you now have a few more suppliers to choose from.
These might be worth a visit satsig, Bentley Telecom & OrbitResearch.

Thanks Roy
Does anybody know if you need to occupy a telephone line for browsing and accepting e-mail, or do you just dial up when sending e-mail, I guess the former for internet security like Mc Afee to work properly.

It looks like you don't need a phone, these are two way sattelite links. Speeds at 512-2048 kbps means 5-20x modem speeds.
McAfee and NAV should work just fine.

I use these http://www.wireless.southwitham.net/ at work. Simple mesh box conected to an antenna, all it needs is line of sight to the next antenna. Of course it must have been expensive to set-up but as a charity servicing a population centre that is in the sticks it is pretty good. Speeds are OK. If you are interested I am sure Tom would give you advice on costs, grants, getting charity status etc.

David,
I had satellite broadband for a year before adsl arrived here. Apart from the latency and cost I was well pleased. Very reliable, very consistant. Unperturbed by high wind unlike adsl on overhead telephone lines.
Biggest cost was teh initial hardware. If you're looking a cheap dish and modem then give me a shout
Willy.
