Linn Index 2/Nait 1/Nac-A4

Posted by: Jonas_Bj on 04 January 2002

Hmm frown

I have Linn Index 2 speakers to my Nait 1. And I think that it's to much treble. I have NAC a4 cables. Could it be that? Or is the possitioning very sensitive? (the speakers stands exakt 6,5 cm from the wall. I Have my swedish (10 öringar), it's a smal coin. under the spikes because I don't want the spikes on the floor. But even if I remove the 10öringar. The treble is still sharp and not so nice confused . Do I have to change to a new pair of trebles?

I Have mailed Linn and Wilmslow Audio. They couldn't help me frown Linn said that it was obsolete. And Wilmslow Audio recomended a pair that wouldn't fit to the speakers.

Personaly i think this is bad service. frown

Hope that someone could help me here.

Will help. I recently changed from A4 to A5 in to Kan's.

Ok here comes the dreaded audio descriptive terminology....

A5 has better definition throughout the range.
- bass is cleaner, has more snap and a bit deeper
- mids are more open with less congestion
- highs are sharper, with more life

Glare and shout are greatly reduced.

A very worthwhile change. Note that the A5 is ALOT stiffer. Bending is best accomplished with a hair-dryer. Looks wise it its very similar. A5 has a thinner web, but the conductor shealths are larger. Basically same overall size.

I don't know what tweet the index used ? Hiquphon would be my guess. Anybody know if it spec the same as the Kan/Kaber etc If so, then you have several choices, from Scanspeak ( SBL ) to various Linn hiquphon versions. Also try contacting Hiquphon directly regarding the OW-1. It may offer a solution.

I used to have the Linn Index II fed by 72/140. I think I know what your concern is, but I reckon the impression of treble brightness is actually caused by the relatively light bass. Perhaps you could try to reinforce the bass to redress the tonal balance by putting the speakers closer to the back wall.
--------------------------------

Well i have tried that also. But then I loose the swing of the music. Hmm, you know? =)

Could it be the exact placing of the spkr so it stands ecxatly right, will it sound fine then?
Did you never get reid of this sound with yours?

Here is a tweak that may vastly improve the quality of your speaker

Tweeter Tweaks

I'm sure that the move to NACA5 would also be a plus.

Jonas--

I used to have a Nait 1 driving Index 2s (which I thought were terrific budget speakers). Ironically the Index 2s showed me how much better the Nait 1 was musically compared to the Linn LK1-LK280 (which admittedly "sounded" better).

Some things I would suggest: Definitely do Ron's tweeter tweak. Have the Nait serviced--if you have not already. Try to add something soft to your room--an upholstered chair, large rug, etc. Definitely change to A5--makes a surprising difference.

Finally--I remember being a student, and am one again. If there is any way you can upgrade your source--do it! The Nait and the Index 2s will tell you all about it.

Cheers and good luck!

Bob

PS--What are you studying ?

Tweeter Tweaks

Hi. I have done that. And personaly I think it killed the naim swinging got life sound. So I removed it. The sound with the mouse pad got that buzzy smooth sound, wich is good, but it killed some life in the music. I already got some rubber rings back at the tweeters. I think they do enogh.

BTW! I have a tweet that has been pulled in by some kid and the seller has pulled it out again. I saw that the day after I bought the spkrs. Damnn... but the tweeter sounds almost as good as the perfect one. Just some smal missmatch in high freq tones at high volyme. This spkrs is for loud volumes otherwise they don't play music with life.

That's one reason why I try to find 2 ORIGINAL ones.

Have done rons tweak, I think it only will fit in a Linn system. The Nait is never serviced =(. I will do it asap. My room, I have many soft things and some people call me cracy when I tell them that I can't have those and that in my room, and I have played with the room totaly empty exept the Hi-Fi stuff. Yeah, the change to A5 will be next step after some damn phonos tho my Rega P3.

Hmmm, I go tho shool 7AM and come home 5PM when I got short day. Lon days then I'm home at 6:30-7 PM. That sux. I'm sudy at High school in Luleå. I go "NaturVetenskapliga + Data, Multimedia" that will be the most advanced standard programs in high school. I don't like school that much.

I have many Interests like, Hi-Fi, Dirt-Bike, Snowmobile racing, Computers, Cars, TV and of course girls & party cool
So I have to spend money on eveything. That's why I Often have smal great quallity budget things. I think that's more funny succeed with things that doesn't cost so much.

Did you end up installing ??

Did you go with the new Linn tweeters or one of the older units?

I'm just going to replace my Kan's worn scanspeaks with the new Linn neo-nevermind tweeters that are in the Ninka et al.

Craig and I are supposed to tackle the job later today. AFTER the new tweeter burns in I will expand on my findings.

Hmm, the new ones looks exactly like the old ones. SPKR 012/5 serial for the new ones. SPKR 012/2 serial for the old ones.

Aha, so ur changing yours also. There seems to be a original problem with old linn tweeters. So tell me, how does the new tweeters sounds? I thought that the first Kan 1 was the best of them all. The one with scanspeak tweeters.

I have had a very similer system to yours Nait 1 and Index 2 but they do need a good stand and careful positioning from the wall so you should get them to work

Yes, I know that. I have placed them 6,2 cm from wall now. And they stand on kue-stone. It swings a lot, for the price of the spkrs. But I miss some of the deep nice movie bass =(

Anyone know a subwoofer that plays Naim sound ?
eehh, not and expensive one. I'm thinking of "Paradigm PDR-8" if it will restore the bass that I'm missing when I watch movies.
