next step upgrade

Posted by: fled on 28 July 2003

I need some advice on my next upgrade, although happy with the current set up, I feal that I need more dynamics / drive, PRAT I suppose ?
I can only afford one upgrade £1000 ish.
Current system CD5+Hi 102+Hi+nap 180 Dyn1.1
Q... Should I go for a 2nd hand 82 or 250 what would each give in turn ?

Phil,

You could sell your CD player and put the proceeds together with you £1k towards a second hand CDX!

You'd make life a lot easier for the amplifier if you swapped your Dyn 1.1's for a pair of Dyn s1.4s.

Alternatively look at swapping your CD5/Hicap for a new CDX2. You should be able to do that deal for around £1200 - £1500. The improvement will be remarkable.

Frank.

think about selling cd5 plus hicap this should realise approx 1000-1200 pounds, cd5 600-700 hicap 400-500 plus u have your £1000 potentially £2200. Youcould pick up a seconhand 82 for £1150 easy (I know where & who)..leaving ...oh not quite enough for a secondhand CDX but close ..go on take the plunge!! £ I wouls say approx. £1200-1400 is needed for the CDX. Failing this you could just get the 82 and toy around with ehhi's untill you get that CDX!

I'm with Nuno, NB, alexgerrard, Frank.
Have a listen to a CDX or CDX2.
FYI, I've got a CDX, but haven't heard a CDX2.
However, a word of warning - some people over on pink fish don't seem to like the CDX.
For me, I think I'll be living with my CDX until I either win the pools or the lottery (and I don't play either, so it'll probably be quite a long time.)

Giving due consideration to Frank's first piece of advice -
quote:
You'd make life a lot easier for the amplifier if you swapped your Dyn 1.1's for a pair of Dyn s1.4s.

Maybe you should try to get a pair of 1.4s on home audition before commiting loads of money to a source upgrade, or try a 250 in place of the 180.

Thanks all, but with the pending introduction of SACD and /or DVDA I am a little loath to spend on a CD player, although I do agree a CDX brings benifits. So I am realy asking for advice on the merits of 82 or a 250.
