Yet more Doors reissues

Posted by: rupert bear on 24 July 2007

I see the Doors CDs have been reissued for about the fourth time on CD. The last time, around 2001, they were HDCD and initially in rather nice mini-LP type sleeves (I only bought one of those in the end, Morrison Hotel, a favourite). This time they have loads of bonus tracks plus new sleevenotes, pix etc, usual stuff, in the over-plasticky newstyle jewel boxes. Anyone know if these are HDCD as well? If not, why not? And why aren't Warners/Rhino putting out some of the lesser known stuff in their rich back catalogue instead of this continuing Doors obsession?

Rupert
I think this latest batch are individual versions of the albums originally put in the recent "Doors of Perception" box set. If so, they are indeed HDCD and sound fantastic.

The main focus now seems to be on releasing every last piece of concert recording which they left behind. I have ordered the Boston concert cd, but Amazon just notified me that release has been put back to the end of next month.

Just another band from LA huh?

According to Oliver Stone, The Doors invented the 60's.... Roll Eyes

Hmmm ... Oliver Stone who made Nixon - the most boring film I've ever seen.

Still the 60s were invented by John, Paul, Ray, Syd, Mike, Robin, Phil, Bert and Shirley.

Quite liked the Doors, but what about the Turtles - now they were just another band from LA.

I'm not sure the Doors even with JM could match the Turtles lyrics

Eleanor Gee I think your swell
And you really do me well
You're my pride and joy etc

or my favourite Turtles lyric from Can you hear the cows

Each and every day
Eating all that hay
Moo baby

So a re-mastered Doors catalogue fine, but please a re-mastered Turtles catalogue would be even sweller (as Howard Kaylan might say) - in fact gimmee both because they'd be so happy together.

or Love, Tim Buckley–any of the Jac Holzman-produced stuff on Elektra....

i dare you guys to sit through the whole viggo-mortenson-as-jim event and then attend a phony doors concert .... you'll be upchucking on yer remastered sets by the and of that night i should think.

I thought it was Val Kilmer who morphed into the Lizard King.

The Elektra box set is a wonderful window into the era. Heartily commended to all who think Elektra was just the Doors and Love, and to everyone else too.

They don't sound much better than my late 80s originals (glad I only sold some spare NACA5 to buy them!).

What I want to know is why most of the tracks on "Waiting for the sun" have the left and right channels reversed (I can't listen to the new version of "Spanish caravan" at all now!), and why they buggered about with the mixes on things like "The end" (so you can clearly now hear him say "f--k f--k f--k my mama yeah" (on the 80s originals and vinyl, it's there, but hidden deep in the mix).

I'm tempted to bung all mine on Ebay or Amazon and buy some more Jefferson Airplane CDs or the new Broken Toy album, as I've only played these Doors CDs a couple of times. The originals got flogged to death!

I was expecting a "Forever changes" 2001 remaster-style production on these Doors reissues. I got pumped.

Nope, nothing rhymes (a little bit of Gilbert & Sullivan creeping in) ... must've meant Mr W and why not his guitar tutorial was legendary and was the book Mike Heron used to first learn the guitar.

Sorry Rupert, but none of the other names you mention are familiar to me. Who was/is Mike Love?

I just looked up Shirley Abicair and she looks interesting she appeared in a film with Sir Norman Wisdom and did a tour with Frankie Howerd to entertain British forces stationed in the Malay Peninsula and Sarawak, Borneo during the unrest there - any recommended recordings?

BTW - I've got the first couple of Doors albums and one called 13 and LA Woman - any others worth getting?
