Bloody sciatica

Sick of it! Sick of diclofenac too!

Apparently it's a middle-age problem. Apparently my discs aren't all jelly-like in the middle but are hardening up - one more thing to resent young people for!

Harumph.

Somehow I've managed to resist quoting the original post (and others) in my reply. I hope it still makes sense?

Fellow sufferer here Deane. A good osteopath sorted me out though (twice) with a combination of manipulation, cupping, (alternate) hot and cold water bottles, and spine stretching exercises at home.

Fortunately my problems appeared to be muscle related as opposed to spinal defects.

Good luck to all fellow sciatica sufferers.

spine stretching exercises

these helped me greatly, i went from a 9.5 in the pain scale to a 2 in a matter of weeks, if i keep on top of the "back bending" i am ok.

Years of long jump, triple jump, high jump, and boxing at school then years of squash (as a pro and international coach)and years of playing soldiers and my back is wreck. When my back consultant saw the x-rays of my neck he said there had been a mix up because the x-rays were of the neck of an old man - there was no mix up and I was 32 at the time! I feel for anyone who has back problems.

Hi Mark,

'Cupping' is evacuating the air out of glass vessels with a flame to create a vacuum.

Several cups are then placed on one's back in relevant areas to draw fluids to the surface.

This treatment was applicable to me, as my problems were muscle related.

And it leaves one looking like a walking Olympic flag! Not sure how it works, but it does seem to, or at least it did for me.

Agree with you about diclofenac - it works but with worrying side-effects. My doctor has prescribed systemic rub on diclfenac - not as effective as the tablets but better than nothing. I find the exercises and advice in Sarah Key's Back Sufferers' Bible effective. Also I have just got myself a TENs machine. There is a certain amount of scepticism about them but it seems to work for me.

Count me in as well.

Facet-Joint Syndrome here thou, the little finger like structures that support the disks. Doc says combination of build ( thanks mom and dad ) and physical stress.
For me it was BMX, Karate, Skateboarding and now Mountain Biking ( I now ride a full suspension with 6 inches of rear squish ) and Canoe Tripping ( with portages upto about 3k - although this summer I'm scheduled for one that is 5.4k. Thats a long way with a pack and canoe on your back - for me anyway )

Normal regime includes, stretches, weights, walking, biking or treadmill, supplimented with Surgam ( Tiaprofenic Acid ). I also have a scrip for oxycodone which get used for a few days a few times a year when the normal regime fails and I end up looking like Qasimodo

regards,

michael
