Modifying a Naim interconnect for a Non-Naim CDP

Posted by: John on 26 November 2002

I have an extra Naim interconnect laying around that I would like to modify for my new CDP (RCA connectors). It would be going into a 52. The interconnect has the L & R and one ground connected to the DIN plugs at each end. The interconnect has an extra ground lead going through that isn't connected on either end.

Each RCA plugs has a ground so how should each end be connected? Do I need to modify the preamp connection as well?

Leave the preamp end as-is.

Cut back a lenght of the outer sheath, taking care not to damage the inner cores or shield, and keep the screen in close contact to the inner cores.

Split carefully into a 'Y' formation, then shrink some heat-shrinkable tubing over each core on which you intend to fit a phono. Shrink another piece of tubing at the 'Y' join, to cover and support the junction.

Fit your phono's - you can try just connecting a single braid at just one of the phono's, or both, as per a Chord cable. It will work either way, some have a preference for the former.

Thanks Andrew:

To prevent a ground loop issue does it make sense to ignore both ground connections with the RCA plugs?

John,

You will need to make at least one ground connection at the phono's, or it won't work.
