What was the last film you saw?

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 11 April 2005

I really think it is about time we started a movie thread.

Recent decent (or not).

'Sideways'. Loved every minute. Sharp funny and bittersweet. I hate wine too.

'The Aquatic Life Of Steve Zissou'. Deliciously odd, if a little thin in places. Suspect another viewing will reveal more fun.

'Million Dollar Baby' Irritating. Technically accomplished, hard not to be impressed by Hilary Swank but ultimately too cliched. The ending could be seen a mile away.

'The Woodsman'. The reason for starting the thread really, my wife and I found it almost unbearable to watch at times (must be even harder if you are a parent) and, forgiving a few jarring moments, found it intelligent and challenging. Anyone else seen it?

'Kingdom of Heaven'; some great battle scenes, questionable dialog. Made me want to read up on the Crusades (usually a good sign if a film does that). Don't know Ridleys' politics but the film was a certain poke in the eye at the current powers-that-be in the US, if viewed from a particular angle.

The new 'Star Wars' was previewed too, and looks good (i.e., darker in tone than the last two).

Watched this just now. Awful editing, I hate football, but still it brightened my day:

Hitchhikers Guide.

What a stinker. Ruined the good bits from the book, brought little new or fresh. Laughed once. Would have walked out except I thought my wife was enjoying it (she laughed twice).

Just been to the premiere of "Sin City" (walked down the red carpet behind Clive Owen, Bella was desperately trying to get a pic of him on her mobile phone but she only got the back of his head) - the biggest pile of shite I have ever seen.

We walked out after 20 minutes - Bella found the violence intolerable, I found the tricks and the clunky faux-hard boiled comic dialogue risible, then irritating - and went for a Chinese instead.

Avoid this film at all costs, it's tricksy, bloated, too loud and well, just intolerably awful and really, really annoyingly juvenile. I don't mind flash - I'm a big Tarantino fan - but this was just empty bombast; thoroughly nasty as well.

I'd rather see anything than have to sit throgh that kkind of rubbish, even a "Star Wars" movie.

It had Clive 'Can't act, won't act' Owen in it. What other indication it was going to be crap did you need?
Confused

I'm astonished he ever gets any film parts. He brings a whole new meaning to the term 'wooden acting.

Watched the last of the star wars films Sat night. Basically a load of fights/battles with the loose ends tied up to make it look like all 6 films were all written at the same time.
It was the first one of the star wars films I had seen at the big screen as well.
Prob won't be watching again until it is on TV

Holy Cross GB/Eire 2003 about the Ardoyne school blockade, and powerful stuff it was too. I was reminded of here in Berlin of a Northern section of the then British Sector known as the Eis Keller (ice cellar) where a small number of kids had to often be escorted to a similar annexed school.
The wall in Israel/Palestine, as well as many others (throughout history) will no doubt prove just as expensive and useless, innit.

Fritz Von Well nothing new there then Eek

Meet the Fockers, Not as good as the first "Meet the Parents" but still had some good laughs in it. De-Niro does comedy really well and makes up for what I think would otherwise be a bit of a dull film.

On DVD:-

House of the Flying Daggers - brilliant.

The Anchorman - unexpectedly very funny indeed.

Wimbledon - a romcom, set at Wimbledon, funny-ish, in parts, that's all you need to know.

Went with a young friend to the movies on sunday last . Thought I could see the Hitchhikers Guide but he'd seen it so decided on
Kingdom of Heaven.
Well I can only say that the director of Gladiator was at it again with every form of bloodletting devise acihievable. Nothing left to the imagination and the theatre full of six year olds.
Now get this, the King of Jerusalem is a leper and accordingly wears a metal facemask[must be quite warm in the sun] and the rest of his body such as hands ,neck etc are wrapped like the invisable man.
He dies and his sister kisses the mask and then removes it and registers horror at what she sees. Then comes the Hollywood overkill. The audience is then shown his face, for sheer shock value obviously. Now I'm just a dumb member of the audience but even I can see that some things are even more shocking if left to the imagination. Nothing in moderation these days, and how does a parent provide suitable guidance as the rating proscribes.

The Party, starring Peter Sellers (DVD)

From circa 1966, very politically incorrect farce about an Indian actor (Sellers w. brown makeup and fake Punjabi accent) mistakenly invited to swish Hollywood party. Insp. Clouseau-style, over-the-top chaos ensues. Hilarious. And painful for me to watch, as someone who is terrified of social gatherings where I know no-one.

Sin City. I liked it, but none of my friends did.
The best cinematic presentation of a comic that I have seen. Puts Batman/Spiderman to shame, more like the Crow.

Watched Closer last night ,Fell asleep ,did not care for the characters at all ,full of there own self importance ,although I thought Clive Owen was good !
