Wilson Pickett RIP

Spookily, I heard on the midnight radio news last night that this soul great had died . Only 64 - apparently he suffered a heart attack. I loved his 60's recording output, including of course, "The Midnight Hour".

I was going to post this sad news, but I had to leave for work. The "Wicked Pickett" was one of the greatest R&B singers of the 60's. His shows were electric. I heard an interview with him on NPR this morning where he talked about the great Memphis horn sound and how today's recordings are over-produced taking the energy out of performance. His recordings never lacked energy and as he said, still sound fresh today. Steve Cropper said that he and Mr. Pickett wrote three songs when they met for the first time and all of them were hits including Midnight Hour. I am thankful to have heard Wilson Pickett and will be relistening to him this weekend.

Absolutely! A sad, sad loss. This morning before going to work I had to give myself a bit of a blast of two of his great classics, "Midnight Hour" and the less-known but still superb "Engine No.9"
There are fewer and fewer of these great old guys left....

See you at the midnight hour.
See you at the midnight hour.
