Cowboy Junkies – The Trinity Sessions (on vinyl)

Posted by: Lapdog on 21 May 2005

I’m super interested in this album, either the “4 X 45rpm” or “1 X 33rpm” and I was wondering if anyone here has had a copy of it on vinyl? I love the album very much but I’m a little worried about the sound quality. The songs were recorded to DAT and the only experience I’ve had of such a recording was with Jeff Buckley’s “Mystery white Boy” album, which isn’t the greatest of recordings.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

Lapdog,

I have a copy on 33rpm vinyl. The recording contains a number of artifacts in the mix which could be seen as intriging or irritating depending on your taste. One of the band members is tapping their foot in time with the music, but what comes over is a slightly delayed thud as the noise travels from the floor, up the mike stand and is picked up by the mike.

I remember many moons ago a hi-fi mag writer saying that the proof of a good system was one which could pick up the sub-terrainean thumping.

My view is that the additional footwork is a distraction - but the music is good.

BLUEKNOWZ – Yeldarb,

It seem that there’s not to many people here that have this LP but I’m glad you two replied. COOK, RCA, and Classic Records released the Trinity Sessions LP making it difficult as to which one I should get but in the end I placed my order for the Cook 33rpm release. Smile

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian- I have the Classic Records 33 RPM version, and it is superb. I hate digital with a passion, and even I have to admit that this is a very good recording. Minimalist, direct to 2 track digital, with no processing really procdued excellent results here. I have the CD which is pretty good also, but the vinyl kills it. One thing to be aware of, Margo's voice was so wispy that she had to amplified thru a speaker, so as not to get drowned out by the band. This was necessary because only one stereo mike was used, a Calrec Soundfield IIRC. As a result, her voice does not sound as pure as the instuments, but that being said it is still very good. Highly recommended on vinyl.

I have also been told that the plain RCA US vinyl can sound very good, but I am not sure which stamper numbers to look for, so I would approach this with caution! Some were cut from a lacquer, and others were cut DMM Direct Metal Mastering (which is not a good thing in my experience). Best of luck in your search, this one is worth tracking down.

I have the Cooking Vinyl issue. I've not played it for ages so I'll give it a spin tonight.

I've got the RCA version. I can't remember when or where I bought it so I must have had it a while.

I'll try to give it a listen tonight too.

I've get the 1x33rpm Cooking Vinyl version too which I've had since the early 90s. It's a stunning album though mine only has ten tracks - I'm missing Blue Moon Revisited and Working on a Building. Didn't even realise these tracks were supposed to be on the album until I discovered a CD edition at my g/f's place recently. The Blue Moon cover is particularly atmospheric, a real shivers-down-spine job.

Thought I couldn't contribute to this thread, but I changed my mind:

"Trinity Sessions" is one of the 10 eternal records that have ever been made (and six slots still available...)

Thought you wanted to know...

I've got the CD and that sounds great on a CDX2 - I'd guess the Vinyl is even better. It is a superb recording.

Coo! forgotten I had this and haven't played it for years. I've got the Cooking vinyl version, and I remember in its day this was rated as the bee's knees when it came to quality of recording. Ideal to demo the good ole' Lynn Sondek!

I always liked the second track best of all. Must put it on when I get home!
