The Next Big Thing

Posted by: Paul B on 18 February 2001

Its been over a year since the NAP500 was introduced. When I first heard the 500 in Seattle I asked Chris K about the 52. Although he had no concrete information he felt that possibly within two years the 52 would be superseded by a new "500 series preamp" however, at a much greater cost. He felt the 52 might remain in production.

Well it's now almost 18 months later. Is there going to be a new 500 series preamp that will be the leap ahead that the 500 was for the 135/250? It dazzles the imagination as to what this might look like or sound like!! I envision a four-box preamp (all full size) with two supercap-size power supplies and a an all-out separate phono section. Of course, I'm just dreaming.

You can call me whatever you like! The only reason I stick with my pseudonim is because I resent being told to use my real name by certain members of the forum (you know who you are). By the way my Sbls are starting to get run in now after a couple of weeks and have taken the music to new heights. I think these represent one of the biggest upgrades I have made, I always felt my system was lacking something which was always a bit disconcerting given the 5 figure price tag! Upgraditis has almost disapeared!

To David Churchill:

I use the lower buttons to select the source for listening to headphones via the Headline. I also use the mute when lowering the Ekos or when the 'phone rings.

Lee, upgraditis is a bit like herpes it goes into remission but never completely disappears. Other than that, I'm glad the SBLs have solved your 'sonic-coldsore'.

Yes. I'm having an 'outbreak' at the moment following an 'encounter' at last year's Hammersmith do. There was also a 'menange-a-trois'with some DBLs and NBLs on the way. I also fancied a Wilson-Bensech Bishop, but I'd rather not discuss it....

Such promiscuity. I think you need to consider some Musical Fidelity.

On the other hand...

Musical Fidelity...

Thanks but no thanks. Ahem...

From what I've heard (and obviously this my opinion!)what a misnomer for a company. Its a bit like Boeing changing their name to 'Plummeting Bird of Fire' in its inappropraiteness. smile

Why is this stuff rated so highly? I heard some of their kit a while ago and found to be very aggressive and forward, in fact just what round earthers say naim sounds like? Anyone out there should really read this months editorial on 'TNT', this guy understands reviewers and why they always 'own' equipment way outside their income bracket!

Probably not. But I must be the only person who 'upgraded' from naim (a 42/Hicap) to a Musical Fidelity (MVT) pre-amp. The less said about that, the better.

My brother phoned me last night to proudly tell me that he has just bought a New Vista amp & CD player. I thought he said that they were made by M.F.

No doubt I will be subjected to them at my next visit to his home.

Bob.

If I come to Bristol - will people still talk to me - or will I be an outcast??

No, Jonathan, you are not. Bob & I have a mutual friend who runs CD5+HiCap into MF Electra pre and 2 x Electra power amps with Kef RDM 3s. All the boxes are on Quadraspire, with MW cables.

He used to have a Meridian CDPn until quite recently. We regard him as a work in progress... wink
