Pretty Girls Make Graves

To follow up on comments made on this raucous punkish pop band in another thread...

I saw them perform in a tiny record store last night, celebrating the release of their new album "New Romance". It being a free, crammed, extremely loud, and sweaty show, they only played for about 35 minutes, but here's what I can tell you:

Go see them live if you can. They're very good. Also- buy their "Good Health" album if you like teaming male and female vocals playing off of one another, aggressive guitars and drumming, and cool twists and turns provided by keyboards and bass. This isn't your average studded leather bracelet and snarling grin band- they can actually play their instruments, and very well.

Sorry, but I didn't grab the new album despite it being just $8.99. I don't know what I was thinking. I did however pick up the "Chk Chk Chk" and TV on the Radio EP's. Again, I don't know what I was thinking.

Great name. I think I will check them out.

(To clarify, my regret regarding the EP's I bought is strictly economical. TV on the Radio was as pricey as some full-length albums, but remembering M. Robinson's review I thought I'd go for it.)

Alex, I've edited my initial post and inserted links to reviews written by people who get paid to do that sort of thing.

Let me know what you think of the album once you receive it.

Where in Seattle did you hear them? I'd like to find some good record stores instead of the chains.

Mitch the show was at at Sonic Boom's Ballard store. They also have stores in Fremont and Capitol Hill.

Silver Platters, Jive Time, and Easy Street are also good choices.

Regarding PGMG, they play Showbox, Sept 19th for $5.

Re. the name - to me at least, I just like the idea of a noisy punk band named after a Smith's song.
