Pentangle- Recommendations.

Dug out an old best of cassette recently. It reminded me I have no Pentangle in my CD collection.
Basket of Light, a best of or what? It will probabaly be the only one I'll buy

Basket of Light and Cruel Sister are fantastic albums (I couldn't say which is best), closey followed by Sweet Child and The Pentangle. Trouble is once you've bought one, you'll wan them all Smile

So best to go for a compilation: Light Flight - The Anthology has a great collection of tracks. I know them from the individual albums, but this is the one I'd go for.

Cheers ROTF. I was afraid you'd say that, might start with a comp. and move on to the two you recommend if it really grabs me.

I only have one album that is

Basket of light

Master guitarists Bert Jansch and John Renbourn's interplay is magical throughout, bassist Danny Thompson also a high point but the vocals I hate

David - you can't be serious, it's Jacqui McShee and I think she's a great singer or do you mean when the lads sing?

No, her singing might be technically very good and all that but I do find it irritating. I could neever get on with that steelyespan ladies voice either. just give me the instrumentals any day.

sorry folks

Hello,

The early Pentangle albums are essential, especially,

Pentangle - self titled
Basket of Light
Sweet Child

However I was pleasantly surprised at the quality oftheir 80s release titled Open the Door. Also check that one out.

This double CD compilation is newly remastered, and sounds excellent.

The sound quality of 'Waltz' (for example) from 1968 is quite superb.

Just got Basket Of Light. On first listen I have to agree with David. Jacqui McShee's voice lacks the raunch of Sandy Denny or the rootsiness of June Tabor. it sounds twee and 'merry maids a milking' a la Maddy Prior. I'll just concentrate on the playing for the time being.

Well we all have different tastes - personally I much prefer Shirley Collins, Jacqui McShee, Celia Humphries, Maddy Prior and indeed Sand Denny to June Tabor.

That aside Malky, do you like Basket of Light?

Oh yes. Jansch and Renbourn's interplay is astonishing, a completely different experience from the more blues based players. Following on from Davey Graham, they introduce that whole Eastern scales thing. Quite magical (and a HUGE influence on Jimmy Page, imagine, without Jansch no Zep).

Did you see the 'Pentangle play the Pentangle'
live set that was aired as part of the BBC4 Folk Britannia season. I believe it was recorded live for the BBC around the same time as basket of light was released and featured a set of virtually greatest hits with some excellent playing from all...

No I missed it - wonder if they'll repeat it.
