MM cartridges

Posted by: seagull on 31 May 2002

Since my recent re-capping of my 42/140 (formerly 110) I have started playing records again.

I have an LP 12 with the Basik LVX arm and am currenly using the Linn cartridge that came with it. Unfortunately, it too is showing its age.

Any recommendations for a MM (or high output MC?) cartidge that I could use with this combo?

Can I use a high output MC with an MM phono board?

Audio Technica AT95E at about 20 quid and a second hand Ittok at about 150. Job done.

I'm with Tony on this one. Not a lot of point in spending much money on a new cartridge for the LVX as that's the weak point at the moment.

I got an excellent s/h Ittok for £200 which sounds a lot better than the LVX even with the Linn K9 (which is probably what you have). Worth also giving the stylus a thorough clean. That can make a world of difference too.

IMHO, avoid the Goldring - they are a bit coarse. The Dynavector DV10 is a cracking buy at £200, as is the Clearaudio Aurum Beta.

Both work well in the Linn.

Also consider an Akito(£125-150) and a Linn K18. The Akito is unlikely to have suffered at the hands of the user, but ensure the(far better than K9)K18 is in good order. The Akito is nearer to the Ittok, in performance terms, than the Basik!
