Why did I buy that?

Some of the more seasoned contributors will probably realise that i have asked this question before but, since then, there has been a considerable turnover of people who post to the pages of this site, so - once again - just what was your worst mistake upgrade wise? To get the ball rolling, when I was eighteen, I purchased a pair of Omar CR456's in preference to the more obvious choice of Tannoy's original Mercury. They had a couple of excellent drivers in them, and a reasonably competent cabinet, but were terminated (literally!) by a thoroughly dire crossover. I can't even say that i bought them without hearing them, cos I had a hour's worth of demo as well! Dozy-arsed ain't in it! roll eyes

I like th Cirkus, but it was no big deal. The PSU and arm, both of which I later bought, were.

I am rather embarrased to admit this but I bought into Pro Logic in a big way when it first arrived in the UK.

I had a Mordaunt Short passive subwoofer.

Yikes, hm,well,ok Pierre, you're forgiven.

I also made several stupid moves,

One of the most $$$ was the first CD-player made
bij Mark Levinson, the Proceed CDP-1.
man, this was one flimsy, plastic piece of ....!
(bought it about 8 years ago s/h only to own something from that highly respected ML,Krell kinda stuff) jee... O,well

Another stupid mistake was swapping my Onix oa20
integrated amp for a NAD amp/cd combo. eeeeeek!
(must 've been brainwashed or something)

That's about it,really.

Greetings,
Alco.

A Thorens TD 318 mk3.

Nice-looking and well-named, but NO sound at all. Dead-boring. The table itself was just acceptable, but I can't understand why those nutters in my country deliver most Thorens TT's with those utterly cheap plastic-looking discount arms (except the 2001 and 520, but there are far better tables for that money - look at Rega, Roksan or even Linn). In Germany, they are at least originally fitted with Regas or SME's.

My dealer was comprehensive, though, and took it back. My current Rega 2 costs half the price and is lots better.

My worst buy has to be the TDL RTL3 speakers (What HiFi *****, at the time). Bought 'em mail order, without a listen. I didn't stop listening to music, but the guy who bought my prior speakers, looked at me like I was crazy. The TDLs gave me plenty of boom for the buck big grin roll eyes red face
