CDX or 82

Posted by: Justin on 08 October 2001

I have read with much interest the thread concering an XPS or 82. As I am a step behind the originator of that post, I have the following question:

If I can afford a CDX or an 82, what is the better alternative for me? I can't afford both.

Current goods are 72/hicap/250/SBL's. cd player is CAL ICON MKII HDCD, which, IMO, is the equal of an unimproved cd 3.5.

I'm pretty happy with the performance of the 72, but would really like a more forward midrange--that is, more intimacy with the event).

Thanks

Then it has to be the CDX in your case.
The 82 will possibly make your system sound worse, as it will reveal the weaknesses of your source.
Also, the CDX will not add any *forwardness* to the sound of your system, but it should eliminate any desire you may have for it... if you see what I mean! wink
It will simply integrate better the whole frequency range by through consolidation of the equipment that you already have...
If only other queries were so easy to answer... frown
If you have any doubts about my opinion on this, which you really should have wink ...
...then go to a decent dealer to try it out for yourself!
CDX/72/Hi/250/SBLs - what a *classic* system! smile
As we say here in the UK,
Suck it and see! smile

It's always a nice day for it, have a good one wink

Judd,

Sounds like two for the price of one to me.

Craig,
PS. You can give me your 72 as a finders fee if it makes you feel better smile

I had a CAL Tercet Mk IV (the Icon's now-discontinued big brother) and recently compared it to a CD 3.5/FlatCap. The CAL didn't sound bad, especially in the areas of tone and detail, but lost out in PRaT. The Naim clearly comuunicated more emotion and rhythm, and I ended up buying one. If you do much listening to CD, it makes sense to have an adequate player; the CDX makes more sense as an upgrade to me. The NAC 72 is a fine preamp, and will serve for a long time.

Justin,

Go for a CDX or a secondhand CDS1 (my preference).

I went from 3.5/hi/102/hi to 3.5/hi 82/2hi because I prefered the latter combo over cdx/102/hi.Also the 82 made all my other sources sound better.

I have not heard your CAL ICON MKII HDCD so ihave no idea how good it is.

With a 72/hicap/250/sbl's combination already, a Naim CD would seem a logical choice.

However, you will have to do a comparison with your present CD player and a NAIM CD player.

If you prefer the NAIM, go for it.

If not, try the 82/hicap/250/sbl's combination demo with your present CD.

I suspect that the CDX is the way to go.

The 82 is fab, will improve your other sources... but may place you in the position of needing to still upgrade your source to gain the sound or at least system synergy that it appears you may currently be lacking.
