Which Starker recording to buy?

Posted by: CFMF on 09 May 2010

I want to buy a recording of the Bach Cello Suites by Janos Starker. Which is the one to get? I have tried the search engine on this forum, but could not find an answer.

Thanks,
BBM

I have these, I believe on a Mercury recording on CD.

Highly recommended.

Mike,

I have heard that the Mercury recording is excellent. I am torn between that one and the one he recorded in 1998 for BMG. Are you familiar with the newer recording?

No, sorry. I am so taken with the Mercury recording, I have looked no further.

Shame. There is a good set on EMI but I think it may only be available as part if a bargain 5-disc set from EMI France (Try looking on amazon.fr). My set contains the solo violin sonatas and partitas played by Johanna Martzy. The intensity of Starker's playing has to be heard to be believed.

Ken,

The EMI recording that I am currently interested in is found here...

http://www.amazon.ca/J-S-Bach-...id=1273598565&sr=1-3

Is this the same recording, from 1998, that you mentioned? I checked the Amazon.fr website but there were no details regarding the recording date, just the date of release of the box set. Could you do me a favour, and check the box set for the actual recording date? Thanks in advance...

BBM,
Sorry, I've been away for a couple of days. The recordings were made in 1957 and 1959 in London (Abbey Road) and remastered in 1996 by EMI Music France. The set you are considering was made much later and was apparently his fifth recording.
I have only heard Starker's later recordings an radio and I can't really comment on the differences between his various versions.
Cheers,
Ken

Ken,

Thanks for providing that recording date for me. I have ordered the 1998 version on EMI...

Another vote for the Mercury. Aside from Bach I like all his recordings on Mercury - this is a very nice hybrid SACD.

Have a listen to Starker playing the Kodaly sonatas, any version is good. I think you can only get the Delos CD these days, but you can still find the other versions on vinyl.
