Balance Problem with my 250/202/FlatCap2/NAPSC
Posted by: AlanK on 13 July 2003
I'm experiencing balancing problem with my new system consisting of 250/202/FlatCap2/NAPSC and CD5. The left channel has a more distinct bass and sounds more forward and open. The right channel sounds weaker. I first noticed this when I turned my volume down to a very soft level and the sound seems to come out more from my left speaker. This is happening to all CD's that I'm playing using the CD5 as well as my DVD/CD player. I even switched the left-right RCA connection on the DVD/CD player and still the right channel is weaker. I tried to move the NAPSC away from the rest of the system and still I got the same problem. Does anyone have the same problem? Any recommendation? Thanks a lot!

What speakers are you using and how are they placed in relation to the walls/furnishings in your room?
Have you tried swapping the connections at the back of the amp to see if it's still present on the same channel?
Cheers,
Paul.

how do you know the the balance settingis at 50/50 on the 202? It doesn't have the knob.

Thanks for all of your replies! I had spent the whole Sunday afternoon taking my system apart, placing them in different positions, swapping the speaker cables, swapping the left-right channels on the RCA cable to my DVD Player, removed the NAPSC... but the problem is still there. My right channel is still weak. By the way, Tuan, you can use the remote control to adjust the balance. When the volume indicator light blinks, you know that the balance is at 50/50.
I do not think that this problem has anything to do with the room reflection, since I notice the problem especially at very low volume. I tried adjusting the volume all the way to the left, and then all the way to the right... and it is very easy to hear that the right channel is indeed weaker comparing to the left channel.
I just got the 250/202 upgrade a week ago. My old Nait 5 did not have this problem.
Thanks and have a great week ahead!

That's the problem. I have the same setup (sans the NAPSC but with a CDX) and I, too, noticed a (slight) balance problem with the left channel dominating. It lasted for about 2-3 weeks or so. Now it's gone and everything works perfectly.

No excuse. SEND it BACK for a new one.

Similar problem with my 112/200 + B&W 7nt. I just upgraded to Nap 200 about 3 wk ago. The left channel is a lot brighter. I did try on my DVD with Mono section as well, but still. I did not notice it before with my previous nap 150.

Alan
This shouldn't happen with new kit and I wasn't aware of it, with my new 202/NAPSC/Hi-Cap/250.
What I will say is this:-
I've been at this silly game for 30 years, and have yet to hear two speakers that sound the same in a domestic environment.
Rooms play terrible acoustic tricks.

Is this noticeable at normal or high listening levels or is it only when you turn the volume down?

First you need to determine where the problem lies. You didn't say explicitly what happened when you swapped the speaker cables? Was the right channel still weaker or did the weakness move to the left channel. If it moved to the left that would indicate a problem with the pre/power (call your dealer) if it stayed on the right that would indicate speaker or room problems.
Assuming the right remained weaker; the next step would be to swap the left and right speakers over. Try and get the positions exactly the same (masking tape under spikes helps in positioning). If after swapping speakers if the right hand channel is still weaker then room acoustics are probably to blame.
I've gone through all the above (a right pain with SBLs) and more but finally determined it was room acoustics, it only happens at low volumes and more noticeable when the door is open! Odd but a quick nudge of the balance control does the trick.
To err is human; to really foul it up requires a computer.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I did try to switch the left-right RCA connections from my DVD Player, switch the left and right speakers, and repositioning the speakers.... and still the left speaker sounds brighter. I used to have a Nait 5 with the same speakers and same speaker location, and it didn't have this problem. The problem is noticeable at normal volume... but can be detected easier with low volume.

Stop wasting your time and get the dealer to come and sort it.
If your old system did not have this problem then the inference is that the new kit is faulty.
cheers

Alan,
Nigel is right. Whether it's an installation, room or equipment problem, you should let your dealer know about it so he can come out to investigate. A large part of a Naim dealers responsibility is to ensure that the customer is happy with the installation at home. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to arrange a home visit.
