iPhone - anybody got one? Any good?
Posted by: andy c on 07 June 2008
As my onward liking for the mac Pro continues, I got a phone call from my mobile phone provider yesterday - this in turn set me thinking about changing from my usual Nokia variation to the Iphone. 3 suggested the Nokia N95 BTW as a free upgrade.
Questions:
reliability?
anyone use one with iTunes as well as an iPod on the same iTunes? any issues with this?
cheers as usual for any replies.

I have an iPod and an iPhone running off the same iTunes with no problem.
Hang fire till Steve Jobs keynote speech on Monday for a likely new iPhone announcement.

I would hang on a little bit, there are still some issues with the iPhone which I suspect will be resolved with a v2 in the near future!

cheers for the advice, folks - I've read similar, hence not being in a rush, and also asking advice...

From what I have read, there are a number of interesting phones coming out in the not too distant future - the fact that you can't buy the iphone from Apple is a bit of a clue that the 3g version is not far off UK release; Nokia are due to launch the N96; and Sony have a neat looking slider thing with a proper keyboard.
That was my reasoning to switch to a sim card tariff and wait for a few months to see what the market brings forth!
I think the biggest issue people had with the iphone is the inability to forward text messages. Hardly a deal breaker, but there you go!!

Just as a point, the other half works in telecom sales, and finds that more iphones are returned than any other phone, and many of the "serious" users (eg professional, tradesmen etc) soon came back looking for something to replace it. Shame, because the Ipod is cracking, but it seems like they although they've got allot in a little box, theres just too much to go wrong or just not to like. Her reccomendation if you want the net and a pda in your phone is a HTC touch, but alas, not a true MP3 player! Incidentally, I wish someone would just make a decent, reliable phone that has decent battery life, calls, texts and doesnt need a software update or "reflow" every 6 weeks!

Hi
andy c, may I suggest you have a chat with symonds14 ref this one, as it is a subject close to his heart. The returns issue that Mr Hanson has raised is one that I have been made aware of.

That's a relief! I thought I was the only one who wanted a mobile 'phone just for - 'phone calls!

There are loads of basic phones that deliver what you want.
I did try moving from a PDA phone back to a basic phone but it was too painful for me. Like only using a PC for word processing.

But the basic 'phones on offer are just cheap, stripped-down versions of the expensive, gadget-laden ones, or really cheap-looking jobs.
I'd like someone to sit down & design a 'phone specifically for making and receiving calls (and, I guess, for texting), with maximum battery life, lightness, good sound, shock resistance etc. as design features.
I've also got a PDA, but it's a separate device from my 'phone.

I want them to make a phone that an ADULT can use. Apart from the totally bottom of the range Nokias (and that's pushing it size-wise) not one single phone on the market has buttons large enough for my fingers (I'm 6ft3, with over an octave's reach on each hand).
My Sony w850i is a total PITA. It's the largest keyboard I could find in its form factor, and I still more often than not hit 4 keys at once. Then there's that sodding Walkman button, designed to get in the way every time you try to open the phone.
I want a 1987-style brick phone with modern innards and a colour screen. Surely I'm not the only one who wants a phone that reaches from ear to mouth and has large buttons?

Give it a few years and there'll be tiny wireless mics and speakers - one for your thumb and one for your little finger. Listen to your thumb and speak through your pinkie...

Probably along with an aerial sticking out of the top of your head!

Undoubtedly.
And there will be questions like, "What the hell are you doing with your hand?"
"Just plugging my phone into the charger...."

Surely not, like the Bionic Man we will all have mini nuclear reactors running under the skin.

Available via O2, I think - not sure if this will change when the new 3G models hit these shores. I saw one for the first time the other week and was hugely impressed by the intuitive interface and overall functionality. There were a few teething troubles, but I expect these to have been ironed out in the new models. I'm going to give serious thought to getting one when my contract expires.

O2 or Carphone warehouse.
The main difference in terms of contracts is that you cannot have the phone until its activated. Basically to kill dead the hacking going on.

The fact i can get it to talk better to my mac via iCal and contacts may be a clincher...but i'll wait go play with one when they come out...
