I'm not swooning, sorry, the only marsalis that even remotely interests me is Branford....

It's Branford's dad. He is the King of jazz piano here in New Orleans. You are all too square.

I know who he is, brat. Some things just don't translate across state borders well, I suppose...and before you say anything, I don't like the brother, either...sterile sounding.
Posted on: 05 August 2009 by mikeeschman
What is this brat thing?
Posted on: 05 August 2009 by u5227470736789439
I bet you I would get on great with both of you if you were not together!
Not my place to say it, but could I ask you to imagine I was there hoping two friends would get on!
Best wishes to both of you. I care about this place very much for what I have learned from it, and so we can really keep the Music Room at least as the best and most civil place place on the public internet.
Please, ... for an old fool?

We're getting along fine George. I think this brat thing is good-natured ribbing. Like friends do in the flesh. What else can I expect from a square?
It's the Three Amigos :-)

Exactly....
I said once before, you can only really get so much out of a forum. If we were sitting together, chatting away, I'm sure things would be totally different. Not that we would always agree, but it would be very civil...and fun.
My own listening group over here, we get all worked up over something, then it dies down, then we laugh and chat once more. I've got lots of stories, as you two and others do, plus, I serve great snacks...

" ... you calling me a square Mike!? Okay, I accept it!
I care for people.
My gratitude to this place is for giving me the freedom [in musical terms] to spread my inqusitive wings and risk ridicule for not knowing a thing, and this means I care very much that we don't create more heat than light. I discovered Helmut Walcha as a result of posts in this room. That is not the only thing though it is the biggest. I have tried to repay the compliment, by writing in all humility of my discoveries and enthusiasms. Not so regularly in the last twelve months, but the archive exists for those interested. It is nothing other than opinion as was the view that I would enjoy Walcha's Bach. That experience contextualised it for me, as I could have missed this noble musician for all my life. Thanks be ...
For me it is about music rather than one person or another's wisdom.
Even I am not righ all the time!
Love you all! George

Me, lil ol me? I am close to St Louis, the other french town. And I'm cat sitting for some friends who are vacationing in your neck of the woods...and I hope they get home soon, I hate litter boxes.
And I'm hardly the square you believe me to be, I hope, anyway.
And I hope this isn't rude to ask, but do you have ADD? The way you pop on here with your big exclamatory statements about whatever is in your head at the time makes me believe so. Not that that's a bad thing, per se.
And, I think my days of poppers and late late night action are over, thank god, but I do enjoy to go out for food, drinks, and music.

I would think George is a sherry or cognac person? Brandy?
Posted on: 05 August 2009 by 555
George has wide tastes, but if I was in a tight spot at a bar I would get him vodka.
BTW I've told Mike before, & now I'll tell you soundsreal.
Stop smoking that immediately & put it out!

Quite right Mike, tap him up for a lesson mate.
Who would have thought it though, a black man's piano in the house of white folk - whatever will the anti-american bloggers make of that then?

Bragging rights?...OK
I used to play with John Surman...I expect quite a few folks have connections to well known musicians

And don't get the wrong idea about nightclubbing in New Orleans. Typically we'll do something like catch a show at Snug Harbor at 9 PM and be home before midnight.

I honestly believe musicians are the most civil and open minded people on Earth. It didn't occur to me that Mr. Marsalis is black. Just don't ever think about it ...

Well it was a long time ago. We were still, at school, 16 year olds when John started a small trad jazz group. Already then he was an amazing talent. He played the clarinet, there was a piano sometimes, bass, drums and myself on tenor banjo. With Mr Surman in charge we got pretty damn good for school boys and got a regular Friday night gig playing for fun only and experience, half the evening. All the old trad jazz standards, 12 bar blues etc as the teenagers jived. Great fun.
We got a bit better, a bit older and were taken on by a local talent manager, joined Equity, and got some paid weekend gigs. John accquired his first Baritone sax 2nd hand which he bought because it was the same price as an Alto in the shop alongside it, and much bigger so had to be better value. He remenices that he blew the lowest notes, which vibrated down to his toes and he was hooked.
John was never going to fit a mold and he led us into playing more mainstream and the Banjo became a guitar. All great fun but not going to last as our school years ran out and we went off in different directions. John to the Royal College of music of course, and on to great things. Others like myself into 'proper' careers like Engineering. The fact that my ear for music paled into insignificance alongside Johns also made music a less than promising pursuit for me. I followed his early work with for example Mike Westbrook and of course have some of his ECM recordings. Interestingly the early days are sometines reflected in his composition titles. St Ives for example.
So there you are...not terribly exciting now, but it was at the time.
regards
Geoff
