Living in Australia
Posted by: SWP on 09 July 2007
Hi All,
I am about to be posted to Australia to work for 4 years and I am being sponsored to do so by my company.
I am currently living with my long term girlfriend (not quite engaged) and obviously I would like her to join me in Oz.
Does anybody know how this works as I have looked at a couple of sites on the net and to be honest it's not all 100% clear! Do we need to be engaged? Will the Oz government recognise her as my partner etc etc...
If anybody has done any similar moves to Oz and has some info for me that would be great.
Many thanks
Steve

yeah, got me laughing out loud too. Worse still, they're sending him "COD".
Surely you'll be able to find out all about it on this site: http://www.immigration.gov.au/
Once you know the drill (rules, policies), you'll probably then need to negotiate with your company to ensure they'll treat her as a dependent (not all companies work the same; if there's no clear policy you'll need to blaze your own trail) and get her included in your package - at least for extra space on the relocation allowances, airfares, assistance with visas (which can be very costly) etc. Easier for their legal dept to process your concubine at the same time as yours 'for just a few dollars more' in the effort department, than distract you with doing it yourself.
Hope that helps.
PS - by running the search on "dependent spouse" there were plenty of hits. have a read through these, there should be answers to what you seek in that lot. http://www.immi.gov.au/panoptic/search.cgi?collection=d...m_ranks=10&Search=Go
PPS - she's prepared to follow you around the world, and live with a hifi obsession? Looks like the final test is to be if she enjoys prawns on the barbie.

Will she be allowed to remove them from the hotplate before attempting to consume them?

Steve,
It appears that you will be on a 457 visa. I am 11 months into a similar posting. I do not know for sure but expect they can include your partner in the application. There is a lot of information available and quite a few people have done it.
I am currently in the UK on holiday (that does feel strange) however, you can either mail me when I get back to Oz or send me your mail address and I maybe able to help with some information and shared experineces.
What part of Oz are you heading to?

Even more important is:
Sydney Audio Club
Audiophile Society of New South Wales
Also Pymble HiFi as they are NAIM Dealers.
I have met some really good people via these two clubs so would recomend you consider this when you get here.
I believe it only becomes a problem with immigration if you wish to become a permanent resident and your significant other is not your spouse.
