Peter Gabriel (1)

This has become available on Classic Records (which is a label who masters from the original master tapes).

Has anyone any comments about this pressing?

I can’t comment on this particular album, but I’m more than happy to give Classic Records the thumbs up. I have several or their reissues of classic jazz albums and they are stunning. I have also compared one against an original pressing; the album was a crazy 1958 RCA Living Stereo by Dick Schory called Music for bang, barroom and harp (50p from a car boot!), and I marginally prefer the Classic reissue (this is saying something as the original is a benchmark recording / pressing).

To my mind Audiophile labels have come a hell of a long way in recent years, I have a couple of Mobile Fidelity albums, and think they are really lame (In fact I’m Ebaying my MoFi copy of Floyd’s Meddle tomorrow!). They kind of kill the groove the way a lot of US high-end audio does. There were some early exceptions, Crystal Clear were always really good, but only recorded their own stuff, so the content can be a bit off the scale.

The current crop of Alto, Classic, DCC are all stunning. They really redefine the record cutting art, and as I mention above can actually sound as good as the original late 50s early 60s jazz cuts – i.e. as good as it gets. Alto deserve special credit for the reissues of two Impulse albums – stunningly good sound that definitely improves on the original, and the sleeves are the best quality I have seen this side of the real thing (you could knock a nail into a block of wood with an original Impulse sleeve they were so heavy).

Thanks for your time Tony.

I also think the Classic records are superb. I have the Led Zep set and Miles "Kind of Blue".

I have a copy of Meddle on MFSL vinyl. I bought it new/sealed 6 months ago for a silly amount. I thought it was quite good, but I don't have an original pressing to compare against.

P.S. I thought your room looked pretty smart. Your creative photography will put me out of a career.

I've just found out that the Classic Records pressing of Gabriel(1) has not been released yet. It was supposed to be out in June.

It is due any time now.

My apologies.

Peter Gabriel(1) - Classic Records arrived today.

It knocks my previous lp for six. The music is more open, detailed and more powerful. Once I've played it, my normal pressing sounds lifeless and does nothing for me.

The difference a good pressing makes never ceases to amaze me. Classic Records always do a fantastic job.

Anyone else bought 'Up' yet?

Just listened quickly and it was rather hard work-perhaps going to be a grower.

It's very, very good. That's about it really.

(Some of the howling in the penultimate track grated a bit, but at least it's in context... It grew on me very quickly indeed, played it through 3 times last night and was most impressed.)

"What a show!", in fact...

I agree with Pete. The more you play it, the more it is getting real precious.
The first track is still nerving a bit.

And RichardN: you are a really bad bad boy! razz
