Who will you vote for.

Chaps

The Spectator is one of my regular reads and it made the point that this election will suffer from voter apathy because a large percentage of the electorate cannot differentiate between New Labour and the Tories. Labour has shifted to the right and this as blurred the gap between the two parties.

I came out as a Tory.

How about going the other way?

Establish a simple, transparent flat-tax system and only apply it locally. Local governments would set their own tax rates and collect them locally. They would then take charge for benefit and unemployment payments, etc. which would be administered locally.

The benefit is that there would be more accountability for welfare and benefits and central government could be shrunk to a fraction of its current size. The tax system would be greatly simplified - it would have to be simple if it was to be run locally - and we could get by with just one income tax payment - no additional poll taxes, council taxes, rates or whatever.

PPS: Dev, what's the answer?
PPPS: Martin D, I'm just trying to point out that an advert on a racing car doesn't necessarily make people smoke.

FFS no! I take it you've never had any dealings with councils or councillors?

Of course the incompetance of local councillors is a main drawback of the scheme. However, I'm hoping that the extra powers would attract a higher standard of applicant.

Running taxes and welfare on a local basis has been a main modus operandi in the UK from the time of Elizabeth I right up to the modern Welfare State.

Mick, you went in as a Tory.

Wow. I went in as 'staunch' Labour and came out as very Liberal Democrat.

Puzzled of Yorkshire,

Presumably you hold some left wing views and the Lib Dems are the party with left wing policies.

I was -0.5, just to the left of centre.

Despite a "strongly disagree" to the war on Iraq it has me down as "slightly free market and pro-war". Perhaps being very free market and very anti-war puts me there?

Jez,
That just shows how far Blair, and If I'm honest, Brown has taken "New Labour" to the right.I must admitt that though as an Old Socialist I was not supprised at the results I obtained from Micks survey. If you listen to the three Main partys polices and manifestoes it is very difficult to distinguish between "New Labour" and the Tories, and that just leaves supprisingly the Lib Dems to occupy the vacuum left by the Labour Party a very clever move by Charlie Kennedy

Who can get the most hanging / flogging Euro-sceptic Little Englander rating ?

As I anticipated on the scale, I am a mouth foaming pinko socialist, but also a bit pro-war and free market? It's a bit odd to respnd to a question to say that you are strongly anti-war and then come out on average pro-war?

Amusing. Smile

Absolutely. Whereas it could be argued that Labour was unlikely to get elected on their old, leftist platform, it could be a different story for the Lib Dems with the old right split between New Labour and the Conservatives.

From a 'sporting perspective' I think that this will be an interesting election. Lib Dems hold the old left ground, Labour have a (seemingly) unassailable lead while the Conservatives have a very effective, although negative, strategy.

...And will Brown and Blair keep the smiles up until May 5th or will they crack?

Steve M

PS: The spoof Conservative slogan that I like best so far is "Are you smoking what I'm smoking?"

The best bit of the electoral week was when M. Howard was provoked into dropping the "I am at one with my peepull' to the demonic flash of rage with Andrew Marr who was heckling at some bash.

More pills needed I fear!

I presume Labour are waiting for the last minute to bring out the Widdecombe catchphrase?

Can someone please explain to me how the hell the tories plan to deliver on their promises?

Their manifesto "list" is so transparently a con.

(I'm a natural Conservate BTW but could never vote for them now)

Well if not being a foaming at the mouth xenophobe, and believing that health and disease are largely social/environmental, then ok.

I have a problem...there is no manifesto on offer that will:

re-introduce poll tax - i.e a household with 4 working adults should pay 4 times more than a single occupant house. Makes sense as they use 4 times the amount of local services.

Repeal the fox hunting and pistol shooting bans.

Remove UK from European Human Rights Act.

Remove the financial and political bias in favour of Scotland (the West Lothian question)

Restore fair electoral boundaries to remove the built-in bias in favour of Labour.

Give a voucher for private health and education - why should you have to pay twice if you don't burden the state's services?

Just putting my flame-proof suit on......

Because of my stance against the war in Iraq (and despite also thinking that British troops should now remain until stability in the country is assured) I'm advised to vote Green.

Or UKIP.

You've got to be kidding!

I stated that I was strongly in favour of the European constitution and joining the Euro.

I also stated that I strongly disagreed with road pricing.

This survey is fucked.

The -10 for Labour and +13 for the Conservatives is about right though.
Posted on: 18 April 2005 by Peter Stockwell
Can't vote, but I took the test.
labour -20
cons -19
LD +38!!
UKIP -11
Green +24!

If I could vote, I would almost certainly vote labour, seeing them as a lesser evil than the conservatives.

I'll be getting to vote on the European Constitution may 29th. I still can't figure out what the best vote on that is.
