DVD Recorder Recommendation

Posted by: Calum F on 29 April 2010

I am trying to find a basic DVD recorder with 160GB hard drive, would have preferred Sony but their entry-level model RDR-DC100 gets savaged on Amazon. Has anyone bought one recently they would care to recommend ?

I have purchased several Sony DVD recorders in the last few years (down to SWMBO and me having totally different viewing tastes).

IMO the old Sony 710 had a nice user interface, which has steadily got worse and much less user friendly with each new player. In fact I find SWMBO's 900 series is difficult to use and totally non-intuitive if you want to do any editting.

Also all of the 3 Sonys currently in use in this house have to have resets about once every 2 weeks when they freeze and refuse to respond to their remotes.

Don't blame you for looking elsewhere.

Incidentally, this thread is in the wrong forum.
I would ask the moderator how to move it, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that.

John,

just initiating an "alert" (the exclamation mark in a triangle icon, right next to the reply and post edit icons) will send the moderators a message.

I have moved this thread to the Home Theatre room. Unfortunately I cannot help with any recommendations as I don't use a DVD recorder.

Is that in the FAQ or help files? If so, I didn't see it. Perhaps "oldtimer's" disease is finally getting to me. Winker

Back to the original thread topic ...

We have 3 Sonys because it makes it easier when taking unfinalised DVD-RW from one recorder to another.

However, the Panasonic offerings looked quite reasonable last time I looked. However, I believe there was at one time a software problem whereby if the aspect ratio of a transmission changed whilst recording, then the aspect ratio of the recording didn't. i.e if it started in 4:3, then it stayed in 4:3 even if the transmission changed to 16:9 (and similarly for transmissions starting in 16:9). They may well have fixed this by now, but I couldn't tell you for sure.

I do a lot of programme editing and DVD burning and was happily using an old Sony HDX890 until the drive became unreliable. Thinking that things could only get better I foolishly got a DC205 and I have to say I’m very disappointed. It’s slow, clunky and feature bare on the editing side. I’m seriously considering putting it on Amazon and getting a Panny. In fact now I type it, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

I think it's possible to change the Hard Drive in the Sonys. Check here on AVforums, perhaps someone knows how. Smile

Thanks John. sadly it's the DVD reader/writer that's on it's last leg. I would be up for a HDD change.
