That's not the real question though - the real question is should you have bought a PC with Vista on it? (Elonex still sell Win XP machines).

If you have a problem e-mail me - I set up wireless networking on a Vista machine today no problems.

I assume the PC Guy is from the company who sold you the machine so tell him to get the thing working, and take the smirk off his face while he is doing it.

Hi Diccus

I always get a bit irate when hear about IT people who react like the one you've mentioned. He should be helping you. Honestly, he's talking nonsense. There is no reason it won't work.

Although I use a Mac and an Amiga - I have no problem with BT Broadband and neither should you. The reason is that if you use an Ethernet modem (which is a router) then the PC should just see an Ethernet interface on the router - it won't even know it is connected to BT Broadband - it'll just work when you switch it on. Your PC will have no BT software on it or anything that needs to recognise BT Broadband - it's the router that does all this not the PC or Mac or Amiga or IP enabled fridge or any other IP device you care to mention.

I use a simple ADSL Nation X-Modem (cost about £25) and anything plugged in to its Ethernet port that can work on a local area network should just work. If Vista doesn't work with this standard set-up then Vista is unlikely to work on any company network - which can't be true.

If you use a USB modem then it's a different story you will need a Vista driver for your modem - however, I'd always avoid USB DSL Modems because they need special software - that said, most common ones do work.

I really don't rate the PC Guy if he can't get it work for you.

Steve has already offered help and he knows Vista so you can be confident it will work. Please let us know how you get on.

Here's a link with some more info

Good luck

There's some great folk on this Forum. thanks

I use a BT Voyager 210 ADSL Router which has ethernet but i need to download a driver.

The shop is a little front street one where they make up pc's to your spec (or suggests a spec). He comes recommended even if he is a grump.

You do not need drivers for ethernet. All you need to do is put your details into the router. You can get access to the router usually byt typing 192.168.0.1 into a browser. In there put yourname@btinternet.com

You don't need a password for BT but if the router will not work without one, type in bt.

If this does not work, stump up 30 quid for a proper router.

Your BT Router has both Enternet and USB connections. If you are using the USB connection to connect your PC to the router then you will need a driver. I would always strongly advise using the ethernet connection where possible.

As Garyi said some of the BT routers are set to 192.168.0.1, others to 192.168.0.255.

Willy.

If it doesn't just work straight away for some reason then

Click Start and select Control Panel

Select ""Network and Sharing Center""

Choose 'Manage Network Connections' from the left hand menu

Right click on the ""Local Area Connection"" icon and select ""Properties""

The Properties window should display a ticked item - Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

Highlight this option and select ""Properties""

Ensure the following are both checked

Obtain an IP address automatically

Obtain DNS server address automatically

Select OK then OK again.

Open browser.

As I mentioned as long as the ethernet card works on Vista the router should have little bearing* (Assuming its ethernet)

Draytek are very good but expensive. Netgear have cleaned their act up in recent years and I have set a number up no problems.

* If it does have a bearing Vista is even more shit than everyone keeps saying.

Just a thought, but I know HP are allowing you to "downgrade" to XP if the PC you purchase is pre-installed with Vista.
