Its back, its live from Riga and it has Russian lesbian schoolgirls*.

Can anyone stop the t.A.T.u publicity machine sweeping away with this years prize?

Matthew

* Except they are not really lesbians or schoolgirls which is just perculiar form of marketing by their mad mother

No, nor should they try. They may not be lesbians, they may not be schoolgirls, but from what I've heard of the music, it's even better than the transgendered Israeli trash fabness that was Dana International, although I doubt if they'll be able to match the parrot-sleeved frock.

Mr Lees - Do not dare to claim my crown. From the lofty heights enjoyed by owners of the complete works of Army of Lovers and Shampoo, my vista is unobscured.

Dana International was a high point. I hear she does a brilliant Cher tribute act as well which might be the campest thing since Liza Minella's wedding.

Then again maybe not.

Throb -- The picture is from "The Gay to Z of Popbitch". A laregly dull e-mail although they did refer to cable channel E! as "Gay CNN" and mention a gay sauna in Sydney that has a special theme night for "bears" (as in hairy men) called "Gorillas in the Mist" both of which raised a smile.

John -- t.A.T.u is some kind of convoluted acronym/wrodplay is Russian which means they love each other or somesuch. A night out in Stoke Newington or Hebden Bridge (tha Sapphic capital of the North) will make it obvious that t.A.T.u are very much the male record executive supplied myth rather than the sensible shoe wearing reality.

Some time ago I interviewed the Americo-Russian writer Gary Shteyngart before a live audience (his novel The Russian Debutante's Handbook is really good).

Needless to say it was a very successful event, but I was kind of puzzled by Shteyngart's repeated, possibly satirical, references to the girl / lez band TATU. Apparently the MTV clips are really something else. Obviously I have as much a clue of MTV as of Metal Gigs...

A little later I read a piece by the same writer in the New Yoaka, prompting a dim deja vu. The picture of the two girls kind of puts it all together. Fortunately they do not wear the regular Russian Pantzer bra.

So thanks

Chaps

The Eurovision Song Contest is something on par with the meals at motorway service stations, you are just amazed that they have survived.

Official Popbitch guide for Eurovision from this week's mailout.

And Big Brother 4 starts this week as well. Could it be any more exciting?

Let the gayness begin...

The Eurovision Song Contest is in Latvia this
year. They've chosen a planetary theme for the
stage. Wonder who's going to be Uranus?

Our quick guide:
1. Tatu for Russia are the obvious favourites but
Spain and Iceland are the fans' choices.

2. Riga's buzzing with the rumour that Elton
will be reading out Austria votes, as he's
having a party in Vienna on the night.

3. Cyprus's entry Stelios is the best looking: http://www.eurovisionhouse.nl/esc2003/2003cyprus.htm

4. Comedy entry is Austria's Alf Poier.
He performs surrounded by various stuffed animals.

5. Dutch entry Esther Hart is famous for making
an exercise video, wearing a leopardskin bikini.

6. Ukraine makes its first appearance this year.
Singer Olexandr has driven to Riga in his
recently-bought Cadillac. http://www.esctoday.com/2003/page.php?cid=38

Suprising there's been no further comments on this thread yet.

UK - nil points.

Austria - Lots of points (didn't they come about 5th?).

I saw about 15mins of this on Saturday including the quite abysmal Austrian Novelty entry. I think the UK voted for this as Second (who the hell is on the UK panel anyway, whoever it is they clearly have no place in the music business).

I thought the 'panel' was the voting public? Did I miss something?
