Remote control with music on NAS - How ?

Posted by: P.Bonte on 07 January 2010

Hi,

My current installation :

Main PC + itunes + some 800 CD's ripped to a WD Mybook NAS (1Tb) in my office room.

Portable PC connected (via SPDIF optical and DACMagic) to main system in music room.

I am looking for the best option to acces via WIFI my NAS and to be able to remotely control this via iTouch.

1. itunes connecting to a NAS library does not give cover art and does not allow remote control.

2. adding the NAS folder in itunes does not update automatically.

3. I am currently trying mediamonkey (seems to update and allow remote control)

Any better options ? Please help !

itunes will display artwork from a NAS, however it can take a while for the library to update.

Best bet is to enable sharing on both PCs.

The music will now be shared between your main PC and small PC.

Then hook up the ipod to your portable PCs itunes and the music will appear for sharing.

Hello,

I use squeezecenter (running on my NAS) instead of Itunes. As remote control, I use Ipeng, a very nice application.

Thank you,

gaet : I would then need a squeezebox ?

garyi : What if my main PC is swiched off (but NAS on) ? My aim is to be able to bypass my main PC and to connect direct to the NAS.

In which case install Firefly onto the NAS, this will then act as a share for itunes on your portable pc.

Hi Philippe,

Not necessarily. You have two options:
1. Use your PC and Softsqueeze (http://softsqueeze.sourceforge.net/) or Squeezeplay (http://mac.softpedia.com/progDownload/SqueezePlay-Download-40837.html)
2. Use a squeezebox receiver.

The benefit of option 2 is that you can listen to your music without having a PC. However, you have to buy a receiver but it is not soo expensive (99£ on amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logite...eiver/dp/B0012K87FC).
