Charlie Haden Quartet West-J*** Find

Posted by: rega1 on 03 September 2008

Picked up Charlie Haden Quartet West "In Angel City" the other day. What a GREAT jazz LP. I have some later stuff of his, but this was early on, and well done. I tried to attach a picture of the album, but no option for me to attach anything on this forum. Just wanted to let some folks know of my find.

Rega-

Can you expound a bit more, what makes this such a "great" jazz LP? Is it the tunes played, the players, producer/recording quality?

I like Charlie Haden; have a few of his things.

Also, is this on the Naim label?

Thanks,
Max

Sorry, I guess I should elaborate a bit. Mostly it is the tunes played. I believe I have come across the original copy so the recording is great. With regard to the actual songs they make you think, "wow, that was a really great riff". It just flows very nice, and the musicians are really on the mark, so to speak. If it wasn't 11:00 pm and I didn't have to get up for work at 5:30 am, I would have listened to the entire album again.

that is the best I can explain it.
Hope this helps.

It is not on the naim label.

I removed the pic as Adam our moderator has asked not to quote with pictures if possible.

Yes!, and thank you. It says I have permission to post attachments, but no luck for some reason. Thank you very much for the pic. It is just a good feeling LP, very relaxing.

Other reasons why the album is to my liking

song 3 "the red wind" side "A" composed by Pat Metheney specifically for the album.

Song 4 side "A" Miles Davis "blue in green"

Song 4 "fortunes fame" side "B" composed by Vincent Mandoza for the album.

3 are composed by Haden himself.

Lots of talent in that gene pool there. Cool Cool

Thanks Rega1.

"First song", which I believe, is the 2nd song on the album, is another good one. Recognized it from the "Beyond the Missouri Sky" album with Pat Metheny. One of My favorite "chill" albums.

YES, you are right!!! That damn Haden/ Metheney " Beyond the missouri sky" is a fantastic CD. I knew there was a reason that I liked Hadens LP even more than "average". Keen ear you have, It never clicked to look there.

Any other suggestions for Hayden? I am looking for vinyl versions if I can. I have Pat Metheney's album "travels" on hold at a second hand until the store owner returns from vacation and can give me a price.

thanks Max Bass,

Rega1-

Charlie Haden is on so many things . . . If you're looking for more Pat Metheny, I like both "Song-X" and "80/81".

The Quartet West album with/especially because Billy Higgins in the drum chair is great. It has some great jazz standards/tunes, including a Charlie Parker tune that is killer. Higgins playing is beautiful on this album.

You could also try the excellent "None but the Lonely Heart" with Chris Anderson, on Naim's own label. It's a duet; different. Check it out first to see if you like it.

I know C.H. is on a lot of the Ornette Colman albums, which I don't have. Never "got" the free jazz thing, but definitely worth checking out.
Perhaps one of the more knowledgeable members in the forum here can help you on that score. I for one, would sure like to know where to begin with Ornette. More importantly, what the hell it is I'm listening to. Big Grin

Good luck with your vinyl quest. Hope this was useful.

Best.

very helpful, thank you. I have 80/81 on vinyl, very nice!! Did you make the jazz fest last weekend? I am in Naperville, are you in the city? Drop me an email that is posted in my profile. Maybe we can get to0gether, I am heading downtown to promusica this weekend to price out a surround system for a friend.

I will assume you frequent promusica to visit the guys and purchase some naim label CD's?
