Leviev / Pepper

This is for Nicnaim, Haim and probably Nigel (Halibut) - I am an inveterate late night surfer on the hunt for odd bits of music. Earlier this week I took delivery of a somewhat dog-eared copy of True Blues. Can't really complain as it was under a fiver including post to Germany.

The LP is Mole 5 and is some further tunes from the session released as Blues for the Fisherman, recorded at Ronnie Scott's. The players are Milcho Leviev (piano), Art Pepper (alto sax), Tony Dumas (bass) and Carl Burnett (drums).

Whilst not as immediately compelling as the Fisherman disc, there is some real treasure here and the interaction between Leviev and Pepper is a joy. Whilst technically a blues, there is a harder edge to the playing than on the first disc but it is a testament to both the technical competency of the players and their improvastional skills that it all hangs together so well.

It might not be a good place to start to access the music of either Art Pepper or Milcho Leviev, but for fans of either it is a worthy addition. The shame is that neither the Blues for the Fisherman or True Blues are currently available on CD. There is definitely a first class CD set to be made from these sessions.

As an indication, I have 3 copies of Blues for the Fisherman - it gets played such a lot and I am constantly nervous that it will get worn out. I think I might be on the hunt for a 2nd True Blues this evening.

Thanks Huw, I will keep an eye out for it. As you say, seems odd that neither are available on CD.
