Assuming that you are taking delivery outside the country, you don't pay state or district sales tax.

No this would be for a "walk in" off the street purchase

Joe - many thanks - I could be tempted by a "toy" from the Apple shop and just comparing the relative costs

Derek,
Does this toy measure, say, 30 inches on the diagonal?

No - it is about 15" by about 9 inches and is either white or silver coloured - I definetely want a Mac laptop by September. My current laptop is now 5 years old and things have moved on re connectivity and capacity.
RE monitors - I have a 20" theatre one and it serves me well - apart from not having any more desk space to accomodate a 30" screen - I have 3 machines on "l" shaped desk that is not much longer than 6 feet.

I have a g4 powerbook, and I'm pretty happy with it, it's done me well these last 3 years or so. Worth noting, that if you want any of the more useful features (especially to do anything other than mirror on an external monitor) then you need to be looking at the powerbook instead of the ibook.

Tam - strictly speaking I use laptops as photostorage and temporary display plus web access and email when travelling - so an iBook would be sufficient - however the "it would be nice" category of features - keeps me looking to the PowerBook range. - PCMCIA card support is useful for transferring pictures rather than USB transfer process. No real need for external monitor support but it if it comes included then good.
And to think 12 months ago I thought apples came only as Granny Smiths or Cox's Orange Pipppin <g>

Derek,
The ibook will link to an external display, but only to mirror. It also scores over the powerbook by being significantly cheaper.
Is that what PCMCIA cards are for? I've never had occasion to use mine in the last 3 years. Still, you never know.

Derek,
the nearest Apple store to DC is at Tyson's Corner (the enormous mall there). Tyson's Corner is in Virginia, hence you luxuriate in their 4.5% sales tax.

IIRC, New York City will add a generous tax of its own to that NY state tax.

If you fill in the right forms and the unit is for export you should be able to buy 'tax free' as a foreign national.
My 2 cents worth.

Actully, it isn't but it's close. The nearest store to DC is in Bethesda. There's also one in Balston. The one in Tysons is the biggest and usually have good stock.
My parents just did the exact same thing your trying to do. You will have to pay the state sales tax anyway. You can try and claim it back at the airport if you have the right documents, but the packaging shouldn't be open on the laptop. You will also need to carry it onto the aircraft with you.
When you arrive in the UK, HMC&E can still tax you as the item is over the xx GBP limit. Then again, they may not.
If the item is used, then you can't be taxed on arriving in the UK because you didn't buy it in the US did you?!
