CD Players... 3->3.5->5

Posted by: Scott Mckenzie on 28 April 2003

Its been a while since I was an active member, new job etc has made things a little hectic!

Hope everyone is well....

Anyway, I am finally at a stage where I can afford a decent CD Player, I had previously been using an Arcam Alpha 7SE, but recently I borrowed a Rega Jupiter off a friend and this made me realise that my Arcam really wasn't good enough!

After trawling around Loot and eBay I have found several for sale and thus far have been drawn to the CD3.5 mainly as it is the same look as my Nait 3R, but in preference to the CD3 so I can add a Flat or Hi cap at a later date... I assume this will make a massive difference?? - in what areas mainly?

The other option obviously is to spend slightly more and get a CD5, I have however heard that it is a quite different sound to the 3.5 and equally that is quite different to the 3. My main gripe there is that I could get CD3.5 and Flat (possibly Hi) for practically the same money and I assume that will sound vastly better?

Any opinions, suggestions ideas....

Current system is:

Nait 3R
Arcam Alpha 7SE (as good as sold)
Dynaudio Audience 40 (wall mounted as no other option!)
Yamaha DSP-E800
Toshiba SD-520E DVD Player
Dynaudio Audience Centre
Mission M5DS

Cables are Chord Cobra all round and NACA5 speaker.

Thanks

Scott

Scott, welcome back to the forum!

If it was my system I would be inclined to go for the CD3.5 together with the Flat/Hi, preferably Hi.

The power supply makes a big difference in the cd player. Its basically the same sound but just more of everything.

However if you want a big increase in sound performance see if you can get a relatively cheap CDX. This will be a big step forward on what you have now.

Like a CDX as I would, they seem to sell for approx £1500, which is too much at the moment... the flat I am looking at takes priority!

I can get a 3.5 for around £500 - £600 and have seen a flatcap for £170... HiCap are obviously more, are they really worth an extra £200??

I am glad 3.5 + PSU seems to be the best idea, as I was heading that way myself. Shame the CDS3 is so much, it looks lovely! Big Grin

Basically, yes. All Naim products benefit from bigger power supplies.

The values of Hi-caps rarely fall because of the demand for them. You may pay an extra £200 now but you will get it back in the future.
