The Best Live Band in the World!!

Posted by: Simon Matthews on 02 July 2009

Steely Dan playing at London's excellent Hammersmith Odeon concert was absolutely magical last night. The band were super tight, the sound was pin sharp and the songs were peerless. Fagen and Becker seemed to be really enjoying themeselves and the crowd were reverential.

The absolute icing on the cake was bringing on Elliot Randall to play the lead on an original interpretation of reelin in the years. Is this the first ever time he has played the song live in the 37 years since it was recorded?

With the likes of Herrington and Carlock etc I really bvelieve that this represents the best ever live steely dan and probably the best touring band in the world today. Discuss...!!!

I'm confused the title of this thread is The Best Live Band in the World!, but there is no mention of Half Man Half Biscuit in your post.

Saw HMHB in Aberdeen a few months back and can confirm they are indeed a very god live man - lead by a man who more than any other I ahve ever seen, truly has no sense of space between the audience and performer(s)...

They really should do their fans a favor and record the concert on film, Can you imagine a live performance on Bluray?

a couple weeks ago when I finally bought a TV and bluray player I put in Concert for George. WOW! great fun and I had a friend over 2 days later and watched it again.

I'm by nature almost totally immune from the definitive claims of any one fan group, as there are so many amazing live performers, in so many different genres, that to say there is one best is always suspect to me. That said, I am a big Steely Dan fan, and a few years ago go to see them play two nights in a small nightclub in New York called Roseland. On those nights, I was a believer. It is especially rich for long term fans who never expected to see any of those wonderfully constructed songs live. They have really managed to make the transition to being a touring band quite well. Next month I am seeing them play an all request show, which should be interesting.

If you don't have it, they did release a nice live CD in the early 90's called Alive in America, which features the great jazz drummer Peter Erskine who played with them in the beginning of their live adventures.

Good listening!

If you read my post above I actually made an effort to avoid being definitive. The idea was to start a discussion where other members discussed competition. For instance Brian wilson had some serious musicians with him when he played london a couple of years ago.

I enjoy alive in America, especially the version of aja, but feel that the latest band is a step up from the first 'modern' touring dan band.

What I would love is a quadruple live CD of the latest tour-aja, goucho, the royal scam all live with another CD of other live material played at this tour. The new arrangement of reelin in the years would be worth the entrance fee alone.
