Congratulations Michael Campbell and New Zealand golf.
And congratulations to the US golf assoc who set up qualifying tournaments overseas thus allowing non tour players the chance to compete.

Yeah, good on Michael Campbell! And beat Tiger Woods to get the title too! The start of great(er) things for Campbell maybe?

Maybe it depends how his head is screwed on and what advice he receives. He has the ability to go on and be a great champion and he seems a very decent sort of human. The problem with some golfers who have won majors is that they had one magic tournament and then were never heard of again. Remember Paul Whatsisname who won the open in a threeway playoff.
No I think this will be the making of Campbell.
By the way everyone has to beat Tiger if they hope to win.

I'm sure his yoga/life guru will do the job just fine!

I'm sure he can afford one now.
Congrats to Michael though I thought he was going to blow it when he pushed that last but one putt past.

He had a six down the last to win so could have 3 putted and still won - but very pleased for him he didn't.

He seems a real trooper. I think it was the 1995 Open where he was leading with a round to go and ended up third and then things began to get a bit difficult for him despite some successes.

I think he'll be a great champion and a real credit to his countrymen. John Hopkins in today's Times has a brief report which read (to me) like Woods let him in rather than he won it. But that's not what I watched last night - he seemed to know exactly what was going on around him and did exactly what he need to do to win.

Great achievment - and the first New Zealander to win a major since Bob Charles in 1963!

Not luck. Sheer determination, perseverance and hard work.

I suppose it wasn't luck that only 6 cars raced yesterday as well ?

Fritz Von He was in the right place at the right time, whils't Tiger was not on form, if he had been he wouldn't have won, it's not rocket science, and as I've already said good on him, but keep it real, innit. Big Grin

Fritz.
Golf is a great game because the best man does not always win. Luck plays a great part in this . How can you say tiger is not "in form. He is not a machine and look at the score he posted.
You must remember Tiger was a phenomenen when he entered the game from a point of view of fitness and technique.
Other top golfers have found ways to reach his leval.
Tiger will never dominate the game again and that can only be good for golf.

A thread about golf eh, Ian??

Oh well, I suppose it's one way of taking your mind off the cricket.....Big Grin

Cheers,

Jon (temporarily smug but fully accepts the Aussies are just coming on song and will be a different proposition come the Ashes! Winker )

Nice to see a fellow countryman succeed at the top of his sport. It has been a long time coming for this nice and generous player. I am told when he plays back home, he donates his winnings to the charitable Ronald McDonald House (which supports families with seriously ill children). Onward and forward. Razz

The reason I mention his guru in the first place is due to him helping Michael over the past few years to bring a focus to his game (and possibly his life) that has finally brought a just reward.

I think they both deserve the win..... but then maybe I'm biased.....

Having spent the last two days spotting* at a local tounament for up and coming young players I can tell you that there is plenty of talent out there. About one per cent will go on and make the Int. tour and have some degree of success.
The winner of last years event, Kim Felton, won on a secondary tour in the US last week.
Last year perhaps $10000 locally, but enough to give him an opportunity.
Last week US$80000 and his card for next year assured.
*Spotting means standing in one place all day watching where drives land.
What a job eh.
