Stock pile normal light bulbs while you can and avoid energy saving builbs that look horrible and spoil the sound of the hifi by putting noise into the mains, or buy the energy saving halogens.

All the technologies you mentioned won out because they gave a benefit to the user. The new style light bulbs are being forced on us by an EU requirement regardless of whether the population want them or find them better than the previous level of technology.

How do these things get a ROHS pass in the EU?
No one stating the environmental positives of reduced energy per lumen seems too concerned about the Hg.
