Eames Recliner, anyone?

Posted by: Top Cat on 07 October 2003

I'm still searching for the listening cum reading chair to end all others. Discounted Lazeeboy and anything too padded, for visual and space reasons, and though I find the Ekornes recliners very very comfy, my good lady has black-balled them...

...which brings me to the Eames Recliner, that classic. Does anyone have one, and what do they think of them? I'd prefer to buy a nicely broken in s/h one, including stool, as new ones appear to be somewhat expensive.

If I were to buy one, can anyone point me in the direction of a reasonably competitive outlet within the UK?

Ta,

John

They are good. They are expensive. A not uncommon combo.

A friend of mine had his imported from the USA from some place advertized in the New Yorker magazine.

I would also Like an Eames, but they are as you say expensive. However, yesterday I found out that the copyrights on various designs have run out (eames included) and are made by the The Chair Company for less money than the likes of Conran.

Try Stokke. You need to click your way via 'the movement collection' to the "GRAVITY balans"

Eames recliner...design classic or late twentieth century 'loft living' cliché?

There are serveral of manufacturers now, the leather quality varies enormously with the price. A well broken in 'original' will cost at least as much as a new knock-off unless you're very lucky. They do look nice, but they don't support the head and shoulders so I don't think they are the ultimate recliner purely from a comfort point of view.

Peter Mandelson owns one...

She asked for a Grand piano.
All I could give her was an upright organ...

We have an Ekornes "stressless" recliner and 2 * 2 seaters. They are very comfortable indeed, and also look good - I can't understand why your wife doesn't like them.

I've just taken delivery of a Stressless chair for my listening pleasure. Mrs S actually recommended it!

Have you offered to let her have one too?

That Stokke chair looks totally barking. I suppose it works, though. Me, I use a simple leather deco-style armchair - I think a Stressless type would cause too much confusion with the listening position. Occasionally too the ubiquitous IKEA Poang.

Dr Frasier Crane seems to like them and it also seem to be throughly liked by one of his lady friends as seen in the script;

Call Me Irresponsible
Written by Anne Flett and Chuck Ranberg
Directed by James Burrows

Frasier: Easy?! This is killing me! You think I don't want to pick you
up right now, carry you over to that Eames classic and show you
why it's the best-engineered chair in the world?!
Catherine: Well, why don't you then?
Frasier: I told you, I can't.
Catherine: Oh! And nothing I can say will change your mind?
Frasier: I'm sorry.
Catherine: Well thank you, Dr. Crane! First you screw things up with
Marco, and now you're dumping me? God! And to think I was
going to have sex with you. [twisting the knife] And it was
going to be hot. Oh, like you've never had before. I'm
talking raw, steamy, sweat-dripping-down-your-back, neighbors-
pounding-on-the-wall, ILLEGAL-IN-FORTY-EIGHT-STATES-KIND-OF-SEX!
But, hey! You're okay, you won't be alone tonight. No, you’ve
got your ETHICS!

Unfortunately the big Gravity chairs are rather expensive. If you ever get chance to try one do. Not to everyones taste, but being able to go from sitting to full reclining by simply shifting your weight has to be experienced. (The chair is stable in several positions.)

I have a smaller Stokke chair at the office, the one that swivels. Got this years some 10 years ago to pre-empt back problems; I am 1.95m tall and had a tendency to sit (as many people do) like a sack of potatos. Had an aching back for the first two weeks as my back got used to having to support itself (I jest not). Since then, no problems at all.

Update: went to buy (or at least re-try) and Eames recliner, having found a moderately local supplier, but found it to be relatively uncomfortable and a wee bit cheesy, next to this:

...now I know that's heretical, the Eames beind a design classic, but the Peel just blew me away - it seems to be the perfect listening chair, and it's a bit cheaper than the Eames.

I've plumped my deposit down, I should get it in January...
