Funky, **** j***. Is there such a thing?
Posted by: mongo on 28 February 2010
Hi all.
I am (yet again) feeling a need to discover jazz. I have tried before, but....
Is there such a thing as jazz with pace? Some funky stuff? Perhaps with a sizzlin' Sax?
I know there are a lot of Jazz people populate this forum so I know that between you there will be knowledge enough and more to help me.
I also know, however, that my description is vague and necessarily untutored. I suppose I mean something not too laid back or difficult to access instantly, perhaps (If I may be so crude) erm..... pop' Jazz? (With profound apologies to Lontano and all other real fans and adepts
).
All help (and appalled abuse) gratefully accepted.
Regards, Paul.

No apologies necessary - my tastes are broad. From your vague description, some David Sanborn could be up your street.
Have you got spotify? Try him there. Upfront or Voyeur may be what you are after. Let me know if you like it or his other albums and I can tell you more stuff then.
There is lots of Smooth jazz out there, some bland some pretty good.

Herbie Hancock immediately springs to mind, especially the following albums:
Headhunters
Thrust
Manchild
Very accessible, funky stuff. Not sure about sexy, but these albums, though controversial at the time, have credibility with most jazz afficionados.
Regards
Nigel

Winelight is a great album - the first"jazz" albumI ever bought. Grover was a super musician.

Kenny G, anybody??? Just kidding.
You could try the Crusaders "Street Life"
A nice mix of jazz-soul-funk.

While you are searching around Spotify and Lala check out these:
Marcus Miller "Tales"
Anything by the Crusaders. The band or the individual members like Joe Sample.
Stanley Turrentine "Salt Song" "Sugar Man" "With Astrud Gilberto" . There are a couple of CTI Samplers out.
Tom Scott. I have "Apple Juice" on vinyl. Light jazz popular in the 80's.
Richie Cole with Eddie Jefferson. Both worth checking out. Anything on Muse Records if you can find it on vinyl.
Roy Gaines "I've Got the TBone Walker Blues.", and T Bone Walker himself and protege Gatemouth Brown.
Johnny Adams is another blues flavored jazzy sound. Had several CD's on Rounder.
Les McCann and Eddie Harris had some fun stuff out years ago. It is a little dated today.

My top suggestion would also be Upfront ... it has everything you're looking for: funk, sex, accessibility, and world class musicians.
Enjoy!

Harris' and McCann's Swiss Movement is a classic. And to my ears it still sounds fresh.
Best,
Fred

I have Swiss Movement on vinyl. It is definitely a classic, and worth getting. I listened to it recently for the first time in many years, and it really took me back.

Mongo,
Another vote for Swiss Movement, great record.
These two might fit the bill regarding your request for "jazz with pace? Some funky stuff? Perhaps with a sizzlin' Sax?"
Regards
Nic
Boney James - Pure
Boney James Rick Braun - Shake it up

ANY album from Fourplay...

I like Fourplay too, stop sniggering at the back!!
Not sure it is funky, it maybe sexy but what I listen to as Jazz, no heckling from south of Horsham.

Barbara Thompson - try Barbara Thompson & Paraphernalia - Thompson's Tangos And Other Soft Dances

Just spotted that Larry Carlton has left Fourplay and been replaced with Chuck Loeb.
Acoustic Alchemy could come under this heading too.

You might try this one:
Though no sax, the whole album, IMHO is very sexy, including Spanish guitar, Benson's playing, and the lush CTI production with strings. Very accesible music.

I just listened to some Barbara Thompson on spotify. Joy just what we need more squeaky wind instruments.
Not as bad as some, whether it's sexy sax or funky, I don't know.
I might have to moderate my views a little , I listened to some more and there are a few BT vids on You Tube, unlike some groups it seems not focus excessively on the leader.
I could even get to like this.

Sorry I missed you there Howard. Was confined to the ground floor sales and advice desk for all 3 days.
Were guests of one of the manufacturers, who took us to the Indian next door to Oceana. We didn't eat til about 1045 but the view out of the window was endlessly entertaining!

I wasn't buying and didn't need advice so I guess that's why we didn't meet.
Must be due for a record buy out your way soon.
