Audiophile CDs
Posted by: Willie B on 27 September 2009
Has anybody any experience of some of the so-called audiophile CDs from the likes of Audio Fidelity and Mobile Fidelity - they seem to be about double the price of mainstream discs but to me that is a price worth paying if the quality is better than some of the re-issue rubbish out there.

Oliver has hundreds of the things and will tell you they are better - no doubt in his mind. He buys a lot of different stuff, much of it second hand Black Triangles (Jap Pressings) and Targets (early Jap and German CD pressings)which have a reputation of being better sounding. He also buys all the MOFI's and Audio Fidelity.
I have quite a few and one I recently bought, the Rickie Lee Jones MOFI sounds fabulous and is worth it. At the end of the day, like a lot of things in this game, the differences can be marginal.
If I were you, maybe buy a MOFI or two and compare it to the regular redbook and see what you think. MOFI's go for £30 a go - you could buy a lot of regular CD's for that. I am not always 100% convinced that at the high price, they are worth it.
A good place to search and pick up views on these kinds of CD's is over at the Steve Hoffman forum.
I would love to hear your findings when you try a few.
Amazon canada are selling the MOFI RLJ Pirates for a ridiculous $9.99, so this would be a good one to try out if you like her.

Thanks for the comments so far. I am tempted by a couple of remasters on AF - The Band and The Door's Morrison Hotel so perhaps I will start with them. I will also try the RLJ Pirates which sounds great value.
I have a number of good Verve Jazz 60's reissues which sound great - probably because the original analogue recording were good and they have not been messed around

It certainly is and I really cannot understand why they are doing it so cheap. It takes a few weeks to arrive but grab it while you can!

Willie,
I highly reccomend the RLJ Naked Songs CD whilst you are visiting Amazon CA. This 'live CD feature some of the 'Pirates' songs and has a fantastic atmosphere & performance.

I bought the Steve Hoffman mastered Audio Fidelity 24kt gold version of The Band on a bit of a whim, blind tested it on a couple of friends against the normal remastered verion and we all agreed the plain remastered one sounded better.
At least it didn't cost much...

Absolutely worth a try but I have seen 'deals' like this in their listings which end up being errors. The regular CD is listed at $27.99 out of stock -this is probably the MoFi price.
The new Santana Abraxas and Marvin Gaye MoFis are quite nice (CDN $29.99). The CARs AF I tried was not up to Steve Hoffmans usual SQ-I thought it too bright and dry. Do not expect the gold DCC sound from these but you might like them (worth a try).
Steve also does the Analog Productions Blue Note SACDs which sound fine. One thing with his work is that he hates using any compression thus preserving dynamic range in most if not all his remasters.

Just checked out Steve Hoffman's Forum site and realised he produces the AF disks - all becoming clearer, especially if he doesn't compress the sound like some of the major labels - thanks Brilliant

Mobile Fidelity Santana first album is very good. It has received high praises in this forum.
I very much doubt that the 24 KT Gold layer has any effect on the sound however.

Pirates on MoFi and Soft Parade on AF will make for a good start. If you like them I'm happy to point out a few more.
Cheers ... Oliver
