New Laptop advice sought

Hi there,
Shopping for a new laptop.
Sort of specification looking for:
Light weight as possible
1 Gb memory
1.6Mz Duo Centrino processor +
80 Gb Hard drive
Decent graphics.
Reliable.
I've found an LG laptop that seems to fit the bill for reasonable money but just wondered about the brand's reliability. Sony always seem to produce nice machines but the price premium is quite significant.
Any thoughts on other brands - living out in the Middle East we tend only to get the bigger brands , etc.
Thanks for any help
Karl

Unless you have a rabid need for apps that only run on Winders then look at the MacBooks.
Much nicer to look at, use and safer on the interweb.

Or, get a (generally) much cheaper PC laptop, download VMWare Server, and run a virtual installation of a Linux distribution (like Suse with the KDE desktop). You can surf the web on Linux running as a virtual machine and switch back and forth between Windows and Linux the same way you can switch between apps running in separate windows. There is some system overhead (but I assume you'll not be using the laptop for gaming) and you will need at least a gigabyte of RAM.
Best thing is, Linux and VMWare Server are free.

I'm looking for a laptop for Mrs D.
Two/three years ago I bought an IBM R51 for my youngest daughter and its served her really well. The DVD drive went funny a few months back, but that was replaced under warranty the next day - flick of a switch, out with the old, in with the new. So I am also impressed with their back-up.
I've therefore been looking at IBM again. The R51 has a 1400x1050 pixcel screen and gives a better picture than any i've seen in the usual shops (VA10 and Fujitsu looked quite good in the shops). It seems to have been replaced by the R60 series which start at about £500 but go up to about £1,250. There is also the "T" series (titanium case) and the "X" series (wide-screen)
Probably worth a visit to the IBM webb site at www.ibm.com.
Cheers
Don
PS IBM sold out the laptop part of their business to Lenovo, a Chineese outfit, so the stuff is all made in China but Branded as IBM

I would build to order the small MacBook with the biggest hard drive and maximum memory you can afford, and get Apple Care. Get an 80g iPod and have fun. But I am not in Abu Dhabi. Mac is so much better and more useful for everyday use it is not even close, if the price differential does not bother you. It also runs windows.

This is like a turntable discussion in the HiFi Room.
Question: I want a turntable, something that's not too expensive, I haven't got the time or skills to set up an LP12 and I live miles from a dealer...
Answer: Get an LP12...Get an LP12...
Why get a Mac running an x86 ISA processor and dual-boot Windows when it's expensive only because it ran a different architecture for so long and didn't have to compete with the rest of the world?
Just get a cheaper PC laptop running the same architecture. As a rule, technological obsolescence will overtake reliability every time with computers.

IBM was outsourcing laptop manufacture many years before the Lenovo takeover, in early 2000 only the top of the range laptops were made in house.
A lot of the big name laptops both Apple and Windoze are made by the same companies in the far east. No doubt each brand claims they have their own unique features and quality standards.

Acer travelmate 3010 fits most of the requirements. Nothing special in the graphics department and the screen is average. Returned to Acer when I discovered the person I sold my last one to is still using it 7 years later!
Sony Viao screens are a dream but the after sales is a nightmare. No wait it can't be a nightmare as that's something that actually happens, unlike Sony after sales.
Regards,
Willy.
