It's OK because it's probably part of god's big plan...

2012 will be the year of the bear flu.

Amazing, that you take this so easy.
The result of the 1918/19 flu: about 20 million victims.
It must be British humour

The Daily Telegraph reports it as potentially 2 per cent fatal and the paper calculates that this puts the total potentially at risk of death at 120 million [out of six billion] - so it is not going to put the over-population crisis right is it.
Some will maintain that there is no human over-population crisis, and so there is nothing to worry about ...

I poo-pooed it and look what happened to me...
No kidding, the guy on BBC news was advising us how to take basic precautions to avoid the disease here in the U.K. and just said "...you should sneeze into the crook of your elbow to avoid spreading the disease". Well that's that sorted then.

Reminds me of the fantastic Terry Nation 'Survivors' series I watched recently - if any of you haven't seen it you really should.
I have to say I'm more than a little surprised that they haven't suspended flights to Mexico yet.

Too much money to be lost...
See how the stock markets reacted ? British Airways stock went down 8%...But surprise surprise, GlaxoSmithKline and other pharmaceutical companies went up 3%.....

If it wasn't already too late I'd have thought it would be flights from Mexico that should be suspended, not to.

The global population in 1918 was only 1.5 billion, so 20 million victims are not few. According to the "Bulletin of the History of Medicine" there were even 50 million vicitims, about three percent of the world`s population.
If the same would happen now, we have to expect 200 million dead. And even this can be optimistic, nowadays the international air traffic helps flu to spread much faster than in 1918.
We need to be lucky.

I ran the marathon on Sunday, and passed someone running in a Mexican outfit - sombrero'n'all.
People were giving him a wide berth. Seriously.
I'm not the world's fittest person by any stretch but I can assure you that you couldn't run a marathon with so much as a heavy cold, let alone flu - swine or otherwise.
I bet he was sick of the comments by the end...
