How can a local authority EVER actually own a new hospital, school, swimmimng baths, etc, etc, if PFI financing is contracted to firstly build, then 'maintain' those 'Public Assets ?', for periods of up to 30 years + (which is now the case). Shorely in essence the PFI contractor will always have said authority 'legally'over a barrel, regerding price increases etc, no cases have been won to-date realting to shoddy & non finished work (Brighton a good example. innit Oldie ?). It really does beggar belief, why can't Central Government/Local Councils borrow money (as everybody else must do) from the B of E, etc, and eventually be in a situation where the taxpayers money is actually being invested, and not actively being thrown to The Brown/Blair Wolves & vultures, who'll be off like a shot when the going get's tough.

I recently became aware that a certain Government department was having it's offices Refurbished etc down Whitehall way,(a few years back) and the boss went apeshit at the PFI estimate. He promptly organised a 'competition' for other PFI bidders, and subsequently & happily rediced the bill by some 20%, and everbody was hunky dory. If one has to accept PFI as a realtity of modern day financing surely at least this 'competition' idea is a good one, saving the taxpayer & treasury literally £Billions. In the hundreds+ of PFI contracts put out since; only three others have played the same game as the first dept, now even after Cabinet recommendations to do so, it has been totally ignored, now why is this ?

Because to date £ Billions of pounds of British Taxpayers money destined for schools, hospitals, librarys, etc, etc, have been consumed by private companys not delivering the goods, and effectively increasing British poverty to-boot, I can only wonder in disbelief. The UK gives large amounts of 'Aid' to third World poverty stricken countries, yet persists with it's own self destruction au fiscal, for the 'Ego's' of a few 'short Term' politicians, Where is the Logic here ?

For anybody on here who's genuinely interested in sport, they'll be happy to see London win the Olypmpic games bid for 2012 just like I would. Stratford in East London has hardly changed since the bombsites of WWII, in that it's a shithole, and has been re-built time & time again back into a shit-hole comprising of el.cheapo buildings and run down facilities (this has no bearing on the people themselves who have to live there). PFI scemes will renew this area (only if London wins it seems ?) piling mega amounts of public dosh once again into private hands for eternity, bankrupting local authorities in the process.

I don't know one Londoner who wants this to happen under these financial cicrumstamces (and why should they ?). Blair is really playing with fire, or just wants to be seen to be having a bash (New York I feel could win).

Playing fields and valuable areas of the marshes etc, will just get taken away from the 'Poor' by the usual greedy quick buck, I'm off sharpish merchants, watch this space, cos that's slowly happening across the country anyway.

The Financial Times reports today that 'Jarvis' is down another good £330 Million of Taxpayers PFI (so it must be all lies then afterall ?) 'investment?'. I learned yesterday that after the Govt's recent 'shaming' regarding the quality of British school meals (or rather the lack of it ), and all of it's 'big' well publicised 'Promises' to improve matters, the rather large percentage of UK schools affected are supplied by (PFI 25 Year contracts, who've sub contracted out to others, etc, and would require massive further 'Public investement' in these 'Jarvisesque firms' to change legally binding contracts, never mind new deals to put real peas on the kids real plates.
